HOW TO GET AN INTERNSHIP-TO-HIRE?

HOW TO GET AN INTERNSHIP-TO-HIRE?

I had an idea. An employer wants to talk to me about an internship-to-hire, but it is kind of far away.

How do I find out how to get an internship-to-hire? Any well experienced ideas? I wanted to find an internship-to-hire somewhere in a certain radius much closer to me.

Is remote internship-to-hire possible? Is there much out there?

Do I just find all the companies and email them?

Do you have any advice? Should I be picky about who to work for? Wage? Etc? Should I just expect unpaid or is it often slightly over minimum wage?

Are some internships horrible?

What should I expect? Especially realistic expectations.

Any stories? Success stories?

In my experience in the tech world, as long as you were a good intern and the company is doing well, all internships are internship-to-hires. A big reasons companies hire interns is to test them out as potential full-time employees once they finish their degree. Plus, they save on recruiting costs of having to find a new person, they already know your skills/capabilities, and you won’t need to be trained as a full-time because you already know what’s going on. And you don’t have to go job hunting once you graduate, everyone wins!

Remote internships depends on the job and the company, I’d say its possible but not probable.

If you are working in tech, under no circumstances should you be taking an unpaid internship. They are scamming you if they are offering to pay you in experience or volunteer hours or whatever they say. Tech has the money to pay you. Unless its a start-up where no one else is being paid either, so maybe one circumstance. But I’d think really hard about it.

Glassdoor for wages and reviews on companies, indeed/monster/linkedin/google search for internship postings, CC’s Internship, Careers, and Employment forum for advice.

Some internships are horrible because some jobs/companies/managers are horrible. Its no different from any other job.

You should expect that they’ll give you a project to do that is probably something they’ve been meaning to get around to doing but just haven’t done yet. Its almost like a 10 week job interview.

If this isn’t a binding decision, I’d take the internship and, once you see how it goes, decide if you want to stay there full-time. The job market can be tough. Don’t limit yourself by throwing out offers because of geography.

If taking the internship means you HAVE TO stay on full-time after, then that’s a different decision.

What if I don’t plan on finishing my degree? Is that expected from most companies? …I dropped out…

Look online at some jobs you’d be interested in. Job sites include Indeed and Monster. What do those jobs require?

Any idea of a good place to find a remote internship? Would cold calling be a good strategy? Or maybe networking through some sort of social event? Like ■■■■■■■■■■?

I believe you are asking in the wrong site. Go to reddit or somewhere else which will be more helpful with posts like this.

And honestly, from the posts I see of yours, you seem to be going in this field for some quick money.
I hope you do know all these rumours about “CS = get rich” are what most high schoolers or those outside of the field mistakenly believe cause while the software industry pays better than average, it isn’t anywhere as high as you believe them to be. I mean there’s only 1 Bill Gates in the world. Not every CS or software worker is going to be Bill Gates the next day…

Personally, if you want to get rich, I think you are better off going to business like fields such as accounting. The amount of time required to study outside class (including learning new languages, making projects, studying for interviews, etc.) is just not worth the extra 3 or 4 thousand over starting pays in other careers (if you are going for a ‘comfortable’ paying job).

That said, once again, as this site is mostly for college prep, I think it is better to post questions about your career in another site such as reddit. You are pretty much asking about the real world with unrealistic expectations in a hurry in a forum dominated by mostly high school students trying to get into college.

Having said:

There is no such thing. You apply for an internship which unfortunately as the starting career in the software industry is becoming very saturated with stuffs like Bootcamps and all, it’s becoming almost impossible to even get one without a college degree. And even then, it’s getting very hard now.

Starting? Sure, if you want to get paid almost minimum wage.

A vast majority of internships are pretty dull but then that’s the workforce in general for almost any field. Plus, outside the few tech firms, many business oriented firms seem to still mistakenly believe that the CS majors are basically IT majors and hence the treatment can often be second rate.

For the rest, you are better off asking in a site like reddit.
Anyways, if you really want some head start with a decent pay, just opt for making a few very basic android and ios mobile apps. Make like 1~2 of each and 1 regular application with python or java or c and put that resume out. Good luck.

@AccCreate :

LOL!! “I’M NOT IN CS TO MAKE MONEY”

and

“YOU’RE POST SOUNDS MORE LIKE SLANDER”.

Please understand…

I’ve been a hobby programmer since I was 13 (mostly on and off). It’s been my dream to be a professional programmer. I’ve done a ton of programming. It’s awesome.

Programming is an great outlet for my intellectual creativity. If I want to make money, no matter what I do, I will find a way to make it–even in computer programming.

Money isn’t the issue. $15 an hour is even OK for starters. It’s always SMART to get a realistic perspective. IT’S NOT SMART to not ask. Please don’t instill the “asking questions is dumb” in this thread and try to ban me.

I believe you have the wrong ideas about me.

Thanks for your posts but…WHOA!!..OVERLY NEGATIVE TONE IN YOUR POSTS. YOUR POST IS SUBTLY OVERLY NEGATIVE and OVER ANALYZING. Not cool.

I’m a go-getter. I will find a way and I don’t give up.

I’m interested in everyone’s perspectives.

Non of what your saying is true of me. All my posts are just asking people for realistic perspectives and possibilities. I never asked business or get-rich-quick related questions. All my questions are about finding ways to start off because I had to drop out of college.

This forum is also dominated by COLLEGE STUDENTS and POST COLLEGE STUDENTS.

I was trying to help you a bit as the information you requested could be better gotten through a site like reddit.

Yes, I was a bit condescending but I still do believe for the informations you requested, reddit would be a better source. And no, I was not trying to ban you nor I have any thoughts getting you banned. I apologize in advance if that was the message you have gotten from my previous post.

Collegeconfidential is a great resource for asking about majors and colleges but not the best place for asking about the real world. There is a reddit for cscareerquestions just for that in which I think it would better serve you.

@AccCreate :
Yeah, sorry…it was over the top and overly negative and not very informative.

You DID over-analyze and made rash assumptions about me. That was your TRULY OVERLY FEARFULLY NEGATIVE post.

It’s not good to turn it around on me and say that I am “mis-perceiving”.

I know you weren’t trying to “ban” me…you were getting me to get me to fear asking questions here so I can instead go somewhere else.

I’ve also heard countless times that a ton of those coding “boot-campers” kind of suck.

Hacker News is a good place to ask as well to get industry opinions.

Ya. I don’t recommend bootcamps honestly as the industry doesn’t seem to like them and the few bootcamps that are decent are already self selectice with test scores, college degrees, interviews.

That said, because of the recent influx of people doing bootcamps and all, the starting career in the software industry has indeed become a bit stupidly difficult since a year and a half.
It’s hard to stand out in the pile anymore and especially without a college degree since there are so many people who claim to program (from experience with bootcamps, etc.) who many times cannot (but still send resumes everywhere).

The best bet is to make an app or two and put it up in Git if one’s resume isn’t resulting in any replies. And I do sincerely believe cscareerquestions reddit would be far more helpful for you.

@PengsPhils :
Thanks.

@AccCreate:
Thanks. I will give it a shot.

I also think the best way for you to get a foot in the door without a degree is to come up with some demonstrable apps.
