How to get an interview...

Does Penn set you up randomly, or do you have to go to a internet site to find someone. My penn portal had some url address about this, but I can't find it. Can anyone out there help?

random and it might not even happen if you are in an area without a lot of alumni

Cougar did you end up getting your penn portal and if you did, was it in the mail or by email?

I finally got it in the mail. My portal still says I'm missing stuff though, but I'm just going to wait it out since I sent everything... What about you?

do you have to contact somebody for the interview, or do the interviewers contact you?

they contact you

How long does it usually take for them to contact you if you live in an area with (relatively) a lot of alum?

I submitted my application on the 21st and still haven't gotten any calls/emails.

So if I want an interview I don't need to do ANYTHING? Not even email or call and ask for one? I live in Los Angeles and im sure theres no shortage of alum so is it likely i willl get interviewed. I submitted my ed app on oct 31st. Will they contact me?

I personally know 4 Alums but they're not on the interview list. Could you still use them, or no?

Right, set up your own interview with an alum of your choice. That makes a lot of sense.

lol crescent...

actually, those kinds of connections are what gets ppl places so its really not far-fetched at all

(i'm assuming you were being sarcastic)

Connections are for exceptions. If one knows someone in the AO who can direct you to a favorable or known interviewer, they could exploit that. The entire system, however, is not meant to allow random people to get interviewed by someone favorable - or else what is the point of the interview?

true, its not the point of the system...but im sure a ton of ppl utilize it to their advantage

@dot510: I'd actually check. I don't think they have many alumni in southern CA. At least registered ones. In fact, according to a friend who got in last year, they don't have one within 100 miles of me, and I'm near Riverside,CA.

Use what? You can't just have any alumni interview you. Do you mean there are a "ton of ppl" who know someone in the admissions office who are able and willing to direct them to a favorable interviewer? I doubt it.

There must be a lot of alumni in So Cal; there are just not a lot who decide to do admissions interviews.

The only people who can request interviews are legacies and they can request an interview ON CAMPUS only.

Otherwise, the alumni interviewer will contact you directly for regional interviews. If they don't have enough alumni interviewers ( not just any alumnus will do), it won't hurt your application if you don't have an interview.

There are a ton of alumni in So. Cal, you are right.

Sorry if I'm asking the same questions again

but so if you recieved your penn portal, do you just sit and wait for someone to contact you?

or do you have to go to a certain link on your portal to indicate that you're interested in having an interview?

sit and wait.

actually..I'm not too sure now because the admission's people said that there should be an option on the application to indicate whether you are interested in an interview. But I just checked my common app, there it no option. So..I'm not too sure.
