I did my CIE O' levels this year and my grades were as follow:

English - A
Art & Design (igcse) - A
Physics - B
Chemistry - B
Math - B
World History (igcse) - B
Islamiat - B
Urdu - B

My GPA (as per the official grade converter) calculates up to 3.8

However, I'm a PRIVATE AS level candidate (AKA AP in American language) and therefore am not regarded with any institution, right now. My O' level school does not provide any official letter with the student's GPA. Now I have to apply for American universities for my bachelors but I don't have any letter or anything that states my GPA score. So when I apply to universities, do they expect me to get my GPA score or can I just send in my CIE grades and let them do the needful?

I am also having the same trouble. Our school gives us marks out of 100 and it is not having all those credit systems. So, how can I calculate my GPA?

Americans would consider that “homeschooled”. Previous editions of the Common App had a homeschool supplement. The current one does not. You’ll have to find a ‘counselor’ who’ll complete the regular school report form for you (which includes a letter of recommendation).

Going back to your original question, you can try to leave the GPA field blank. Unfortunately, it’s possible that the GPA field is required for the school report. If you do calculate a GPA, it needs to be consistent with the grades that were actually given to you. Like a 3.25 in your case. NEVER convert foreign grades to their American “equivalent”. (Americans don’t have a consistent grading scale either. At some schools only the top few students will have a GPA above 3.5. At others, half of all students will get a GPA above 3.5. Yet other schools grade on a completely different scale, e.g. out of 100 or out of 5.)

One more FYI, when American colleges ask about your grades, they don’t mean your O-level or A-level results. They want to see the grades your classroom teacher gave to you. O-level and A-level results would be submitted in addition to your classroom grades.

You’d report your actual average, e.g. 76 out of 100. (The GPA field will ask you to indicate the scale that your grades are on.)

^actually this is a bit different for British patterned schools because the O’Level results may be the ONLY grades a student has. Mock exam results may be incorporated into the final results, so that the O’Level results do correspond to a GPA. In that situation, sending the O’Level results only is sufficient; you will also need to send your tutor’s report on your predicted AS Levels.

The CIE result to American grade system is easy to find, and can in placed in the school profile, with a scale like this:
A*= A+/A
A=A
B=A-
C=B/B+
D= B-/C+
E=C
F= D
G and everything else (U, etc) = F
