I'm trying to get some 'gigs' as a tutor, my parents have already 'hired' (with several forms of currency incl. not having to do dishes, and lose change/dollar bills my mom finds while cleaning around) me to tutor my young siblings, but I obviously want to get more clients.

Anyway to advertise? Should I post flyers? Or should I use CraigsList? Kind afraid of pedophiles on Craigslist... Any ideas? Or is this one of those things that only people within like friends circles can do?

If you want to volunteer, just go ask around at local elementary schools, boys and girls clubs, after-school programs, or other sorts of organizations. My friend’s volunteered hundreds of hours by doing that.

For pay, I think you would need to start getting referrals. Most parents are going to be skeptical of hiring people to tutor their kids who they don’t trust (or think they trust). A good idea would be to start asking family friends with younger children, and after a while they will refer other people to you, and so on.

Just walk up to a Boys and Girls Club and offer to tutor? I might as well earn some volunteer hours, and perhaps gain some experience/recommendations for private tutoring.

I guess this will be easier said than done… -_-

If you are a top student at your school, I would ask your teacher(s) for referral. My daughter started tutoring by accident. A friend of ours asked her to tutor their kid. Their kid’s grade went up quite a bit, other parents heard about it and started calling our daughter. She had to turn away some tutoring by referring them to her friends. Through out 4 years in college, she continued to tutor some of those kids whenever she came home to visit.

Our daughter got paid a lot of money for tutoring, but it also took a lot of work. She took initiative in speaking with those kids’ teachers (what to focus on and progress report), and she would prepare beforehand. Some of those students were very difficult, but they liked her. You need a lot of patience to be a good tutor.
