What are some ways to get to UCSD from LAX Los Angeles Airport? What are the cheapest ways? I'm personally coming in on June 7th at night and need some cheap way to get there, any options that you guys know of?

craigslist

carpool, train?

Isn't there an airport in San Diego?

Are you flying in from somewhere into LAX?

The flights are very expensive from LAX --> SD. So you wouldn't want to fly. If You can take a train from Union Station to Solana Beach. Then take the 30min bus to UCSD.

On second thought forget all that. Just rent a car and drive the 2 hours there.

Walking is probably the cheapest.

^ hahah

amtrak or metrolink, then bus it from the station to ucsd

i have a smilar problem. my friends who are going to muir orientation seemed to have chosen a different date, which is now fully booked. so right now i only have the option of taking the train since i can't rent a car because im under 21. how far is downtown san diego (or wherever amtrak can take me closest to ucsd) from ucsd anyways? how long would the bus ride be?

I think it's about 2 hours. The closest station i think is Solana Beach from Los Angeles Union Station. The bus ride is like 15 min from Solana beach to UCSD

My flight gets in at around 6pm on June 7 to LAX and I need to get to UCSD by that night... how would I go about doing this? I'm under 21 so I cant rent a car, so bus/train/shuttle would be the only options, does anyone know of any cheap nightly ones?

Look at this UCSD tranportation web page for some info:

No bus goes from LAX to San Diego area? or from LAX to Solana Beach area?

Greyhound.
Charter bus.

Buses are expensive.
Flying is...expensive.
Walking is out of the question, lol.

As for trains, there are TWO options:
-Amtrak:
Amtrak trains are comfortable and offer things like a snack bar. They're a bit more expensive than the Metrolink alternatives, though.

Visit Amtrak.com and book your LA to SD ticket. Be sure to select Solana Beach as your destination. They're usually in the $30ish range.

Get to LA Union Station early so you can pick up your ticket.

Arrive at Solana Beach, and take the 101 bus to UCSD. You can ask around to see where the stop is. Take the southbound bus to UCSD. The fare will be $2.50.

Metrolink
These trains are quite a bit less expensive, but still a good option. They're not as comfortable as Amtrak trains and they do not offer any onboard snack places. Also, you will need to get off at Oceanside since that's as south as they go, so your bus ride to campus will be longer.

Check the Metrolink schedule showing rides from LA to Oceanside here:
http://www.metrolinktrains.com/schedules/html.php?id=54

Arrive early and get your ticket at one of the kiosks.

When you arrive at Oceanside, look for the southbound 101 bus to UCSD. The fare will be $2.50.

The 101 bus route costs money, but once you get to UCSD, you should hear about getting a bus sticker from parking services, so you can ride the bus for free.

I hope all this helps. See you all next year.

Ihavenolife, UCSD is not in San Diego - it's in La Jolla!!

Well...La Jolla is actually not a city, it's a community in the large city of San Diego.
