I'm a good student, have good grades, am nice to teachers, etc...but how do I stand out among the rest and get one of the "best in 10 years" recommendations?

In addition, how do I talk to my counselor? I ask her for advice on colleges and stuff, but how do I make it more personal for a better recommendation? I feel awkward telling her all my extracurriculars, as if I'm bragging or something. So how do I get her to know me well?

umm. well a lot of people dont know their counselors well. if youre concerned about her letter, maybe give her your resumee along with the recommendation form.

Ummm... I don't know if this is something that you can manipulate to be frank. Do the best you can with what you have. I interview half a dozen students for my HYP alma mater every year. I'm SURE each of them would have loved for me to give them the highest numerical ratings "Once in a lifetime candidate" -- but I've not run across one yet. Sure I've had 7 or 8 admitees over the years but the students are who they are --

I've had seven this season, two of whom I thought were above average (by average I mean stellar scholar & very engaging)and truly unique. I have no earthly idea if any will get accepted due to the crushing odds.
