How to Get In

I absolutely love this school, except idk if i have the qualification of getting in…and its for cs so i know its super difficult…i talked to the lady that came to the college fair at my school and just fell in love with the school. Is it a holistic review of the application of are there some factor that are more important? Any advice

Great test scores, great grades and get some experience coding before you apply if you can. Write and market your own ap, get a high school internship at a CS heavy company or something of the sort will help. Unless you are are an under represented minority in CS, you need to have superior stats and something that sets you apart in extracurriculars.

what are some good examples of test scores particular to this college…bc most colleges have different opinions on what the best scores

also is there a higher acceptance rate for early action, etc.

UIUC does not do early action anymore, they have a single admission date. This was the first year for the single admission date.

I would say 35-36 ACT and a GPA of 3.8/4.0 are generally what you need to shoot for. That seemed to be where students were getting accepted. CS at UIUC is very competitive. That is what happens when you are rated in the top 5 for CS in the nation. Of course there are exceptions, it also depends on your geographic location, your ethnicity, your extracurriculars and your essays. Look at the stats of those who posted as accepted/waitlisted for CS for this fall. There is a thread on CC that lists several and they are very detailed. It should give you an idea of how you compare to those accepted.

Just as an FYI, my son was denied for CS (accepted for general studies) with a 34 ACT, a 2230 SAT and a GPA of 3.74/4.0 at a very good high school.

@CSmajorQ since your son was accepted in DGS will he still be able to go into computer science?

Hi CS1117. To get into CS he would have to transfer into the department from DGS. The transfer requirements are very high for CS at UIUC and there is no guarantee that he would meet those requirement and be allowed to transfer. Rather than risk it, he has decided to go to his second choice school where he has been accepted directly to the CS department. Although UIUC is better rated for CS, I think the school he chose is a better fit for him. Sometimes things work out the way they are supposed to.

I was actually suprised that I got in. GPA: 3.3 (UW) ACT:32 Class Rank: 257/443, Freaking good essays, and OK extracurriculars. Just have some good extracurriculars, write good essays, and work hard in school!

FOR ME though, I am ethnically asian. But I never listed it, it may or may have helped race shouldn’t be a factor in college admissions anyways.

@marzipan1 did you get it for the cs program?

Some of the CS+X programs may be easier to get in to.
