How to Get Internships as a Freshman?

Seeing as I have * absolutely no experience * and am trying to learn as much about banking/finance on my own, I'm just wondering how to go about it...just connections and cold calling at this point? Will it even be possible to get anything at an actual investment bank/boutique? (what should I do this summer and next year to be competitive for interning at a BB next year or the year after?)

I'm a freshman at berkeley now btw

contact alums, friends/family in the industry. a few banks have frosh/soph specific programs.

If you don’t get anything, do something interesting that shows initiative (like climbing mt Kilimanjaro) that will make your application stand out.

Thanks! Yeah…even the people my family knows are like “she wants an internship as a freshman?!?” Which is understandable seeing as I don’t have too much to offer at the moment. I’ll keep an eye out for * something * that I can do though.

good luck!

Thank You!

right now is a prime time for informational interviews.

Research EVERY firm in your most nearby major city. With half of them, set about 2 or 3 a week for the next month and you’ll be exposed to numerous individuals in high positions.

If none of these people offer you an internship after talking with you, contact the other half in march and ask for internships directly in your very first contact.

The opportunities are out there you just have to find them.

I’ll get on that then. Is it that easy to set up interviews though?
