How to get into college

Hello,

How much does student council help with getting into competitive colleges?
What about varsity sports?

thanks

It depends on what you mean by “competitive colleges”. The top colleges want students who are interested and interesting. There is no magic formula of “this EC will get you in” or “this EC won’t get you in”. But in general, treading the same path as thousands of other high school students isn’t a great way to stand out. You might read “How to Be a High School Superstar” by Cal Newport to understand how top colleges think about ECs. But you also need good grades, good test scores, and a pretty rigorous schedule as well.

Do what you enjoy, do it the best you can, and then find colleges that fit you.
Don’t try to fit a college.

The best way of getting into a competitive college is earning excellent grades in an academic curriculum. Followup with good scores on admissions tests. When those pieces are in place, you can think about ECs that matter to you.
