how to get into consulting

I'm very interested in going into management consulting, however I'm not sure exactly what it takes to get your foot in the door. I go to UCLA and I know we have a few consulting companies make appearances at our career fairs. What kind of qualifications are they looking for? Will a 3.5 in economics be good enough for them to consider me? Do they value work experience and extra cirriculars a lot? I'm just trying to see what I should work on most this upcoming year before I look to start applying to some of these firms.

Specify what sub-field in consulting you're interested in...

Also, are you BS or BA Econ? Further, how's your facility in math? Math is DEFINITELY helpful. Internships?

Going to a non-target school is not a crippling factor.

sorry I guess I didn't specify. I'm actually a business economics major. I'm not particularly strong in math. I did well in statistics related classes, but Calculus was not one of my strengths. As far as internships, I've worked full time for the army in business management offices that buy communications equipment for the past 4 summers.
