^ I second that question. I heard that it's hard for undergrads who compete with graduates for research opportunities, etc...

I also heard that lots of undergrad classes at Harvard are taught by TA's... can anyone elaborate? It doesn't seem very Harvard to me to have TA's teaching oversized classes.

TAs lead discussion sections; they don't 'teach' the classes, professors teach lectures.
This is only true for intro classes. There are lots of opportunities to enroll in seminar style classes where your only interaction is with professors.

So you're saying that most students DO interact directly with professors inside and outside of class and are able to create a sort of "bond" with them, etc.? That's just one of my biggest concerns...I'm scared about enrolling in a huge class of say, 100 people and just being completely lost in the detached lectures and such. I'd rather interact with others in either smaller classes or outside of class with a professor.

Are you serious? 1000 kids in a class? Crazy..

But then again...I remember sneaking into a lecture in the Memorial Hall auditorium when I visited Harvard last spring and it was packed with students. I think it was a psychology class though..

Remember, Ec10 is taught exclusively in sections of about 30 people with occassional lectures. Professor Mankiw, or "Menky," as a lot of my friends like to call him, maintains a facebook and his own blog -- he's pretty accessible from what I've heard.

spiffystars -- That must be Psychology 1504: Positive Psychology, which is also called "The Happy Class." I think I'm going to be taking it this coming Spring. It'll be a nice balance to the other classes I'll probably be taking.

hi,
getting into harvard seems like a dream...how would i get into harvard if i'm in New Zealand and do i have to obtain good scores from when i first started high school? we dont do SAT either, we do NCEA in NZ.

right now my cumulative GPA is a 3.55
I am in 2 varisity sports and varisity debate.
I don't have any other scores right now.
Do you think think my GPA is too low to get in?

School just got out today (I was a junior this year) and I'm already freaking out about colleges. I just wanted to basically list my resume and see if I have any chance AT ALL of getting into Harvard. It's my dream school and I've heard that yes, I have a chance, no, don't even bother, blah blah blah. So, here goes...

GPA: 4.3
SATS (first time; plan on taking again): 1920
APS (after next year): 3 - US History, English, Calculus
Ranked 9th in class of around 210
Class Treasurer
Student Council Treasurer (also been on stuco since freshman year)
Foreign Language Club
Junior Medalist (1 of 15; received St. Michael's College Book Award)
Varsity Field Hockey
National Honor Society

Also, I got to a public school in a really small town, but my school offers Latin and I've taken two years of it. If, when applying, I say that I want to major in classics, will I have a better chance of getting in?

I haven't written for a long long time, I know, and I haven't exactly been keeping up on the posts on here, but I'm looking at the "what are my chances?" posts, and quite honestly, JUST APPLY. SO many bright people that I know haven't applied because they don't know what their chances are...nobody knows what the admissions office is looking for, so just do it and see what happens. Seriously.

im sure tens of millions of people around the world would do ANYTHING [literally anything] to get accepted to Harvard =\ its a pretty big life accomplishment

its one of my dream schools (not because its harvard, but because it has the most amazing resources, extraordinary student body and a lot of things no other place has) and i want to apply but i want to be realistic about it because it seems like the only way to get in is to find the cure for aids or something. so im gonna list my resume and see if anyone who knows about this or has gotten into harvard can tell me if i have a chance...

im from puerto rico, lower middle class, from a small town from where probably no one has ever gone to harvard

gpa is not calculated in my school as it is in the states but ive gotten As in every subject since 9th grade so i asume it would at least be 4.0

ranked 1st in a class of about 90
1910 SATs which i realize quite sucks for their standards but should improve now in october..
top score in my class and one of the best in the country on the college entrance exam in puerto rico (not the SAT but also by the College Board)
ive taken the most advanced classes my school has to offer ( no APs cos my school doesnt have them)
student council member
national honor society member-president of my school's nhs
vice president of the science club
six years of classical guitar education, played in a bunch of different ensembles in school and elsewhere
played soccer for the last two years
community group member

i went to a journalism program at penn state summer before last, and to a biotech summer program at a university here last summer but i realize none of this is too weird or extraordinary like the things other applicants seem to have done (cancer research, summer in a third world country feeding the poor...) i know that the other 25,000 kids who apply have much more impressive resumes, so does anyone think i have a chance of at least getting my app looked at by a school like harvard or penn (provided i write some damn good essays)??

Just wanted to make a correction... the far better nickname for Prof. Mankiw is "n dot" (because he's N. Gregory Mankiw). He is relatively accessible - has weekly office hours, but doesn't email them out until day of/day before. Really responsive to emails though + writes a great blog (be sure to read it if you're in Ec10 - last year he offered a free dinner at the faculty club to the first ~10 people in his class who responded. I got to go + had a great time).
