I am interested in HPME at Northwestern and would like to know more. I heard that it is really competitive, but a little more information about what I will generally need other than SATII and SAT scores will be very helpful. Some examples might be EC activities, but then id also need to know what types, specifics will really help.
Thanks

Most successful HPME applicants have one to two summers of research, hospital or other medical volunteering, shadowing apart from high academic achievement and competitive standardized test scores.

How is the atmosphere for HMPE?..is it much more intense than what a normal 8 year program would be or is it less because students dont have to worry about the MCAT’s?
Also, would you be able to list a few more activities that might put me over the edge of others as i expect most to have what you have already mentioned.
Last thing, do you speak from experience?

One thing to keep in mind that it is easier to get to Feinberg regular route than to HPME. Also, it is not such a bad idea to take MCAT at all. Gives you certain experience (although at much lower level). I am talking from experience - my D. was accepted there - she has applied out of her bs/md. She has chosen another SOM to attend.
She did not apply to HPME, she was looking for substantial Merit in UG and Nw U was not in a picture.

Can’t say anything about atmosphere but until this year, it was considered very hard to get into with some of the easiest requirements to move on to medical school (3.0 GPA). Now the requirement has been moved upto 3.4 GPA.

I am a parent and I know a few people who completed to some who are joining this year. There are multiple levels of elimination (they have to approve you to apply, call you for an interview and admit which means 3 levels). It is very hard for anyone to say this is what will get you in but it is not that hard to see what is great about those who got in.

Just a quick question. Is SAT Chemistry ABSOLUTELY necessary or have there been circumstances where it has been overlooked?

Youll probably be competing against those who do.

Yea I’m pretty sure most people will have it but will they throw out my application if I don’t have that ONE requirement?

You could always try and let us know once you find out:P
But i wouldnt risk that if i were you.
Do you know anyone who has already gotten into the program?
…does anyone?
It would really help if someone who has been accepted or is a parent or sibling of someone who has gotten accepted into HPME responds…thanks.

Chemistry and Math II are required. You may not get an application sent to you if you don’t have them.

There are two or three students/parents who posted in the combined admissions discussion thread stating they were admitted this year. Look for the thread under multiple degree programs. It is right at the top about interviews.

I typed under the search button Multile Degree Programs, but i was not able to find the thread talking about interviews. Could you make another direction post?

Your thread is currently in the multiple degree programs.

If you are using a regular computer, you should be able to click it on top to go into that directory.

If anyone is still on this thread, would someone already in the PLME or HPME programs mind PMing me? I’m currently a freshman in high school looking for advice on how to boost my resum

Are you completely out of the running if you don’t have medical experience (ie, research or shadowing)?

Does your SATII score in chem have a heavy weight? I will only have had 2 months of AP Chem before taking it…

Here are the average test scores for the 2012-13 application cycle:
ACT 35
SAT 1541/2314 (CR+M/CR+M+W)
SAT Chem 780
SAT Math II 782

I understood from a HPME graduate that interview calls are driven by depth of research while allowing an application is driven by stats and scores.
