How to get into UCI?

hopefully the budget cuts won't drastically alter this

that would be horrible
i heard they brought up a proposal on admitting 7% more out-of-state
not sure how it's doing though on whether it passed or not
anyone have any info?

It wasn't even presented for a vote by the Regents.

Got in the honors program as a Biology major.
GPA: UC 10th & 11th only (W: 4.4, UW: 4.0)
SAT: 2080 (CR: 600, M: 720, W: 760)
SAT II: BioM: 790, Math IIC: 730
AP: Only 3 (Bio: 5, CalcAB: 4, Stats: taking now)
Senior schedule: very weak
EC: tennis team, peer counselor, volunteer (less than 20 hours), art, tutor
Rank: 97th percentile, about 20 out of about 850 students
Essays: I thought one was really good and the other was a bit cliche
I was also ELC.

I say get a good GPA (above a 3.7)
an ok SAT (above 1,500)
Do very well on SAT II's
Good AP scores

and a great Personal Statement

oh, and don't apply for bio, everyone does so don't do it!

I'm currently a junior in high school in Colorado. Do you think I could get into UC Irvine (under Biology or just anything actually) if I have a 3.88 right now and a 1700 something SAT score? I plan on taking some AP classes to bump up my GPA my senior year, and I am retaking the SAT in a month or so. I haven't taken my AP tests yet, but I don't think I will get a good score for AP Gov, but probably a 3 or 4 in AP Lit. Is it possible for me to get in?

I don't think ap scores really count for anything
you should really try to raise up your SAT for a good chance, because senior year grades don't count for uc's

Good to know cause I don't think I will do good on them. All I know is that if you get a 4-5 (and sometimes a 3) on the AP tests you can get some college credit depending on the school. MaMoose in the other topic said that the average acceptance score is about 1840. Do you think even if I hit 1800 flat, I will have a decent chance? UC's is just California University's right?

UC's are california universities, but they are harder to get into for out of state students. is your 3.88 gpa your unweighted, UC weighted or weighted gpa

Unweighted 3.767 and Weighted 3.884

http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2008/freshman_admit_profile_2008.pdf

according to that average UCI admits have a 3.94 gpa and a 1834 SAT score. both your gpa and sat scores are below average and you are out of state so that hurts your chances also. i would say you need to have a 1950 or more to have a decent chance at UCI

Ah ok thanks. I guess I will have to study like mad. 1700 something to almost 2000 is a huge jump though. I don't think I'll make it :( Do you know if there's anything where they need more out of state students or anything? You know how sometimes colleges need more Asians, or more females, etc, stuff like that?

On that spreadsheet, what's the ones below with a question mark?
BK = Berkeley
DV = ?
IR = Irvine
LA = Los Angeles
MC = ?
RV = Riverside?
SD = San Diego
SB = Santa Barbara?
SC = ?
UW = ?

Also, what's "Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC)" and "Low High School API (API score 1-4)"? Sorry for the questions.

I know someone who got in with a 1470 SAT

Do you know what awards that person got, how many/what extracurricular activities they have done? I just called the office of admissions and she said to still apply even though I fall a little short of the averages. She said since they are averages, of course people with lower than that have also gotten in, but that they look at your extracurricular activities and all of that stuff. Do you think I should volunteer like crazy for the rest of the year? I am planning on volunteering at the hospital this summer (but I heard it's only 1 day a week for a couple of months). And I'm in National Honors Society with 60-70 volunteering hours, Outdoor Adventure Club, Project South Africa, and Ping Pong Club. I've never done any sports, but maybe if it would look better for applying, I could do cross country with my friends my senior year. So what should I do to better my chances other than trying to finish off my junior year strong and getting my SAT scores higher?

BK = Berkeley
DV = Davis
IR = Irvine
LA = Los Angeles
MC = Merced
RV = Riverside
SD = San Diego
SB = Santa Barbara
SC = Santa Cruz
UW = i think its average for all the colleges

and i think the uc's have too many asians, so if your asian it will hurt your chances even more, even though they say race does not matter

you should find a volunteer position that relates to what you're applying for, and do that over the summer. try to get at least 100 hours of volunteer total. also you can take some classes at your community college to bring up your gpa

If my math is correct, I think the average SAT for OOS at UCI was ~1908 for Fall 2008. So, yes, you are looking at a 200+ point increase to be competitive.

Sorry, being Asian is not going to be a "hook" at the UCs. And unless the proposal to admit more OOS for their tuition revenues gains traction, neither will being out-of-state. Unfortunately, some of the factors that aid in-state students (ELC, high school's API score) aren't available to OOS applicants. Other factors (ECs, volunteer work, overcoming life challenges) are. Godbreath's advice is good about community service; 100 seems to be the magic minimum for some of the UCs. If you do pursue college courses to boost your GPA, make sure: 1) You complete them before your senior year starts; and 2) The courses are transferable to the UCs.

Frankly, it's more likely that some of the private universities in California would "reward" OOS applicants for the geographic diversity they bring to the table.

Thanks for listing out what all the abbreviations stood for. I want to get into pharmaceuticals and I am going to volunteer at my local hospital this summer. That's basically the only volunteering position that I can find that relates to what I want to apply for. So is that ok if the rest of my hours are just random events and activities? The hospital thing should only go for about 2 months they said.

No wonder I didn't get what ELC and API scores were, they're an in-state thing over there. What are some good private universities that you think I might have a slight chance of getting in to, but are still "better" than CU Boulder?

to bluepowder

She was in NHS, has socioeconomic difficulties, got supplmental, was in band all 4 years, etc. extensive community service

Try USC. Other privates include USD, Cal Lutheran, or Loyola Marymount though none of these are Tier 1. USC may be your best best.

@haikumarukuchan
Do you know how many hours of community service she did?

@pinkfeather
Do you know if all of those schools are better than CU Boulder? If not, I can try searching it myself. But I can't apply to schools that aren't. CU Boulder is my fall back if I can't get into a California college that's better than it.
