how to get into University of California-Riverside?

I'm a sophomore in high school right now from Virginia.
-3.5 GPA (unweighted)
-played Freshman Field Hockey in my freshman year
-played JV Varsity Field Hockey in my sophomore year
-participated in winter track and field in my freshman year
-currently in the Spanish Honor Society
-IB classes I'm taking in my junior year are IB English, IB Spanish and IB HoA (History of Americas)
-Pre-IB classes I've taken so far are Pre-IB Government, Pre-IB Chemistry, and Pre-IB World History.
-I plan to take IB Math Studies, IB Psychology, IB English 2 and IB Spanish 2 in my senior year.
-I have a leadership role in my church youth group
-I volunteer at soup kitchens frequently
-this summer I'm going on a five week missionary trip to Cambodia and Vietnam to help the poor that have leprosy, HIV/AIDS, and the people who are blind.

I plan to be a psychologist or a psychiatrist. And I know I have a whack plan but I also plan to take advantage in being in a college in California so I would have more opportunities to be in the acting industry.

mycollegeoptions.org suggested me to this college

Hi vivianh4! Here are some resources I recommend exploring:

-For more information about UCR and its admissions process, open up a MyUCR account here: [MyUCR[/url] It’ll give you access to important deadlines and other information about the application process. You should plan on following a-g coursework (read more about that here: [url=<a href=“http://my.ucr.edu/admissions/Pages/pathsAdmission.aspx#freshman]Paths”>http://my.ucr.edu/admissions/Pages/pathsAdmission.aspx#freshman]Paths to Admission](http://my.ucr.edu/Pages/default.aspx)), taking either the ACT with Writing or the SAT by December of your senior year, and taking and passing your AP/IB exams. Any exams you take will have the option of submitting your scores to any colleges you’re interested in. Even if you change your mind or forget to submit your scores, you can always submit later by phone or online.

-You’ll need to apply to UCR (and any other UCs you might be interested in) by November 30th. This website: [University of California - How to apply](How to apply | UC Admissions) will give you more information about application deadlines and how to apply to a UC.

-UCR is one of the most diverse universities in the nation and prides itself in its community service. So, when you’re writing your personal statement in your application, make sure you talk about your community involvement and leadership roles! More info about the personal statement here: [University of California - Personal statement](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/how-to-apply/personal-statement/index.html)

-Talk to your high school counselor if you have any questions about your coursework or test scores. You can also contact UCR’s Undergraduate Admissions office directly by calling (951) 827-3411 or emailing admit [at] ucr [dot] edu.

-Keep in mind which majors are open/closed. A major is closed if the program is too full of students. Currently, psychology is one of UCR’s most popular majors. If you apply to UCR as a psych major and the program is closed, then you might get rejected because the major cannot accommodate additional students. Check here: [University of California - Check majors](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/how-to-apply/check-majors/index.html) to see which majors are open/closed at UC campuses. This website will be active during the application viewing and filing period, which is October/November.

That’s all I can think of. No matter which school you apply to, admissions representatives are looking for quality, not quantity. Don’t worry about taking on a huge number of activities! Do things you’re passionate about and have fun with them.

I just re-read your post. You want to get into the acting industry? That’s central to LA/Hollywood. If you’re serious about acting, you might want to stick to schools that are closer to the LA area. UCR is about 45 minutes away with traffic.

The only other public schools I can think of that are close to LA are UCLA and Cal State LA. UCR admits 62% of applicants and UCLA admits just 25%, so your chances of getting into UCLA are a lot more competitive. You might want to consider applying to schools as well as public schools in the LA area. Loyola Marymount is right up the street from Hollywood, as well as USC.

loyola in hollywood? no.

theres a catholic university by the getty and above ucla, called mount st marys.
lmu is by lax.
theres usc.
ucla.
csula
csu northridge
csu dominguez hills
occidental which is in a GREAT location
also caltech
whittier
or you can transfer from a CC. los angeles city college has a extremely great program for people wanting to act.
theres also the pomona colleges a little closer than ucr.

i also recommend san diego if you want to do theatre they have a great theatre there modeled after the globe of shakespeares fame.

Ah, my mistake about Loyola. It’s a beautiful campus, though - maybe that’s why I forgot it was by LAX, haha.
