How to get involved with research?

I'm a high school junior. During this summer (2011), I would like to get involved with some sort of research/internship. I want to major in engineering in college, and am particularly fond of science and math. I live in the Detroit area. Anyone know of any opportunities/ways of achieving this? Thanks in advance!

Contact some college professors/research firms in your area and ask if you can help.

Thank you, anonymous! Research firms? Like what?

I know in my town, there are a lot of retired professors who come and rent out some space in an industrial park and do research. Sometimes they are just companies doing research for engineering. I am interested in chemistry, so if I was doing research, I would call up a firm and ask if they have any chemists working for them. Here are some examples of research firms [Research Connect: Research Firms](http://researchconnect.com/research_firm.asp).
Keep in mind that you are a high school student, and people may not find you qualified. Just be persistent.

Thank you very much!
