How to get involved with undergrad research?

I was recently accepted to UB for chemical engineering and I was also accepted into the honors program. I really want to do undergraduate research and I know that UB has the center for undergraduate research, but I also saw that honors students have their own reserach program it seems. What is the best way to go about doing research(through honors or through center for undergrad research)?

My son is an engineering major( dual) at UB. declined Honors offer (and had no interest in it at any school- he has enough work without it).

Son got unpaid research position as first semester freshman and now has paid position. I’ll try to find out how he got it. Think it was a posted position. You can always call the Chem Engin. dept office to find out for sure.

Ask professors. That’s the advice of one of mine - “knock on my door.” There are a lot of research opportunities, but you may find they aren’t all posted - if you show your interest to a professor, you may get a better opportunity.

Agree with above, there are opportunities if you seek them out and show interest. My dtr is a freshman chem eng major in the honors program( she didn’t pursue research opps this year just wanted to get the course work down however she did applied for summer undergrad research experiences thru NSF and was very fortunate to get one at the University of Iowa for 10 weeks. They are tough to get especially as a freshman, she applied to 3. Her advisor and chem teacher wrote her letters of rec for her app and were thrilled to hear she made it. I think the center for undergrad research is more A&H related but there are research opportunities within the school of eng.
