How to 'Get it Out'

Hello,

So I have good, personal essay topics to write about for my commom app. But, my only problem is that I can't take all those feelings and my perspective and the experience and bring it out on paper in a creative, memorable way. I've tried writing 3 different essay to see which topic I can express best; however, either it turns out way too long and end up containing more telling in lieu of 'showing' or it just sounds boring. Any advice on how to tackle this?

Secondly, how long is too long for the common app essay?

Lastly, would using metaphors in a college essay be a good idea? I've read in many places that this should be avoided.

Thanks in Advance!

Write out everything on a piece of paper, then choose the best points and organize them in an outline for your essay.

How long is too long - I would stick to a max of about 800 words. 600-700 is about where you want to be, i think.

And as for metaphors, I think one or two super original ones are OK, but if you overuse them it can make your essay seem UNoriginal and also kind of boring and corny. So go for it, but only if they’re really good. And don’t overdo it.
