So i received a very generous package from BU. My EFC is 20k and I received approximately 42k in financial aid (33k grant + loans and work study)

While they have met my EFC, the issue is that the EFC is not reflective of what my family can afford. A variety of factors (such as one unemployed parent + an above average financial year for the other(real estate)) have resulted in us having an EFC much higher than sustainable. For me to be able to attend i would need to received roughly another 10k in aid (hopefully in grants) for me to be able to attend. If given, I would love to attend BU.

My question is how do I go about asking for some more financial aid? I am planning on visiting in the next week or two for reference. Advice much appreciated

There is an appeal process but unless the changes in your parents’ financial situation occurred after they filed the paperwork, more aid is unlikely. Even if BU were to increase aid, it would likely be a thousand or two more.

@TomSrOfBoston The problem is that the previous year our household income was a mere 90k, we had an unprecedented spike to 120k in income and we do not anticipate that spike remaining. Any other year were I to be applying to college my EFC would be much lower. im not quite sure how to express this to the school…if there is no way, plus loans may be the final option

Did you parents put aside that extra $30,000 in a college fund or spend it? BU may ask that.

Also, a “mere” $90,000 is a funny statement.

The money went almost entirely to paying off debt and expenses. Also, my parents finally were able to put together a down payment purchase a home after years of renting with the extra cash. We are under contract for a condo in the neighborhood, not too extravagant but a nice change from the constant moving between homes situation we’ve had to deal with

I didnt intend for that statement to sound to obnoxious, It’s just we live in a very high expense area of the country so it is not as much as it would seem
