There are a certain number of “recruits” that each coach gets to be automatically admitted, and it’s usually the tippy top athletes. I’m good for track, but i’m not tippy top. The coach does know I would plan on trying out for the track team, however, and I’ve asked him to say something to the admissions office, but he hasn’t gotten back to me yet… That’s where we are on that.

D got waitlisted at WUSTL, and accepted early action to Stanford. She’s not asking to stay on the waitlist.

yeah at first i thought about not accepting the waitlist spot because it kind of doesn’t really feel great to know you’re a college’s backup person…

trackie10x,

If you really want to go to WashU, and won’t ditch it for Brown or Penn, making contact BEFORE April 1 was the right course. They’ll realize that you aren’t appealing because you were rejected by higher choices. Also, if you do get into Brown or Penn next week, and if WashU is truly your first choice, you should immediately have your AC contact WashU and let him/her inform the school of these Ivy admissions, and that you prefer WashU over them.

Wash U will admit you, because it will make the admissions people feel really good about themselves and you that you hold WashU in such high regard that you’re going to send “regrets” to two other great schools if WashU takes you.

Hello everyone!

I just got waitlisted for Duke, one place that I really wanted to go to. I have been reading over the thread and getting some good advice on how to stand out as someone on the waiting list..does duke usually pull from their waiting list?

AVDude, I am waitlisted at Duke as well, and it is also my first choice. From what the letter said, the average number ranges between 10 and 75, but has gone as low as 1 and as high as 200..this year is going to be a little different than most too, so we’ll see how it goes. Good luck!

Duke went to their waitlist last year. But it changes from one year to another. My sense is that schools like Duke will go to their waitlist because they have a lot more applicants from Harvard and Princeton’s EA/ED pool.

I was waitlisted and I read in a couple posts that, if waitlisted, to send additional recommendations. I’ve alreadyy had one of my professor write a recommendation, but should I send more than one? I’m sure I could find someone who would be happy to write a great recommednation for me, but as I already sent 3 recs when I applied early, and am sedning another one now, would one more be too many?

Also, I think a couple posts suggested calling the school or at least keeping in contat with your admissions counselor. This may sound stupid, but how exactly do you do this? I mean, I wrote a letter indicaiton interest, I e-mailed my counselor with updates, and I called to make sure that they received everything I had sent so far, but what to do after this? I can’t think of any more reason to call or e-mail anyone in admissions as I’ve already given them everything I’ve got (at least for now), but I still want to show interest. i also don’t want to annoy them with meaningless calls or emails containig just the smallest tidbits of new information. Have I done everything I can, or is there something more I could do?

Thanks very much

i would recommend calling to “confirm” that they received anything you sent by snail mail and asking if they have any new information for you

also, what types of recs were the first three you sent? were they a counselor and two teachers? if so, you might want to think about sending a rec from a coach, employer, or somebody else who knows you in a different context

HomeschoolDad’s response is brilliant. All I will add is OF COURSE you should appeal. There is nothing to lose. Sometimes a really outstanding candidate DOES slip through the cracks. Refresh their memories about how great you really are.

How do you think appealing these decisions apply when financial aid is important. I wish my D could say that if they reconsider, no matter what, she would accept, but unfortunately the money aspect is a big consideration. She has some very good offers from other schools, but is still not truly convinced of the right choice and is obviously still considering the one she got wait-listed to.

they were actually from 3 teachers and one counselor. and then im having a professor that im taking a class with writing another one, and i was pondering the idea of having my advisor at teh college im taking courses at write one becuase, whehter i deserve it or not, he makes me sound like god
i just think 6 recs (including counselor) is way too much, even if it was november since they read the last 3.

After reading your “resume” in your initial post, the title of a song (or it is a movie?) “I"m Dancing as Fast as I can” popped into my head. I have a daughter in 7th grade and I would feel like an abusive parent if I tried to get her to do everything you did.
In any event, I wish you luck. Can you relax yet?

haha thank you… i always come home from work at 11:30 at night and my mom will talk about how she’s so tired from her day at work, and i go, “oh really? well i went to school today, then did student council at lunch, had some more classes, tutored after school, went to practice, left and went straight to work, where i stood on my feet for six hours. i think i’m tired.” and my boss hates scheduling me around all my activities.

i think i just need things to keep me busy because if i don’t have something organized to do, i’ll sit around and watch tv and do nothing

anyway, homeschooldad, amazing post. that was a really clever aspect i wouldn’t have thought of.

kcbmom, the finaid part is important for me, too. even if i do end up getting that lucky phone call from washu and getting accepted, i’m not sure how much money they’ll have left over for me. that might impact my decision. actually, it will definitely impact my decision. compared to paying almost nothing at other places… not so attractive.

oh, and i got into boston college today! :)

trackie youre truly an inspiration!!! im almost certain youre gonna get in haha. #7 in our class was waitlisted at washu but gained acceptance into MIT and UChicago! while some ppl around #30 and #40 got in.

i can def attest to how you feel about washu and tulane. my first choice is brown, and i truly am in total love with that school haha. i just got into grinnell and theyre being quite generous with financial aid BUT im still waiting for the 31st @ 5 o clock =]. just like you said “all i have to do is believe”, thats exactly how i feel with brown. im more mediocre than you it seems in terms of grades lol- ACT 27 but ive got a pretty decent list of ec’s and well respected awards id say (eagle scout, 1st place in natl competition, all that yadda yaddo whoopla) AND im a minority which may/may not help me. however im pretty sure the school knows i wanna go..i was very blessed in that i got to meet the president (of brown) when she was here giving a lecture! she’s also from houston too which is pretty amazing! after meeting her my dad said that i should follow up by writing her an actual letter in order to leave a lasting impression. not only did she reply to my letter she said she’d passed it on to the dean of admissions (something i soooo wasnt expecting lmao) and to this day she remembers me!!! i visited last week and now i know that brown is absolutely that perfect place for me. so, all it takes it belief and things’ll start going your way- no negative thoughts whatsoever.

keep us posted and i wish you only the best of luck. keep believing :)

Rofl you could even use this thread as evidence of your dedication to the school.

Once again, good luck.

Trackie, I have been reading your posts and wish you the best in attending Washington U. I’m sure that you’ll be receiving good news soon.
My son just got accepted at BC yesterday also and he’s previously been accepted at NC-Chapel Hill, Geneseo and the U of Rochester. He’s waiting on Notre Dame, Washington and Lee, Tufts and Cornell. Unlike you, he doesn’t have a clear cut favorite so he needs to make a decision soon.
We’re also in Rochester (my son attends McQuaid), so that’s another reason to pull for you. Good luck!

trackie10x,
my aunt is a psych prof at boston college. it is an awesome amazing college. all the kids are brilliant. you should definitely consider going there. boston college definitely is a great backup for wustl! lol.

How is the waitlist used?

I got waitlisted by Stanford.

DSL1990, are the kids really brilliant at BC? i got into BC’s honors program though waitlisted at washu, with nearly identical credentials as trackie. so i was thinking, while i wait for washu to realize how much they actually do want me to come, could you tell me more about BC? i should learn more about the school, since i might very well attend it in the fall.
