How to get reseach experience after not practicing biology after several years?

Hi everyone,

I graduated 2 years ago as a econ/bio double major and have been working these last years as a financial analyst. I have decided that I hate what I do currently want to go back to school to get a masters at least in biology. I've been trying to look for research positions to improve my application but because I previously have not have any lab experience and have been "away" from biology for so long it seems impossible to find any full time research associate positions. Part time positions that I have been looking at seem more suited for undergrads still in school as all they are is washing dishes and I'd like something more substantial. What possibilities are there to actually get research experience for a person in my situation? I'm actually considering whether I should ask my old professors if they'll take me on in their lab as a volunteer. Is that possible?

thanks

Do you live near your alma mater? If so, doing research, paid or unpaid, for your former professors is a perfectly valid option. Programs don’t care whether you were paid, only that you have research experience. Of course, you’ll have to have some sort of financial cushion to support yourself during this time, especially if the PI accepts your offer of doing it for free.

If you decide to approach your former professors, make sure you tell them exactly why you want to work with them. Professors love to hear that their students want to pursue further education in the field and are often willing to go out of their way to assist in the effort.
