How to get to know a professor ?

How to get to know a professor ?
I always hear this advice to know your professor for letter of rec, to do better in class,...I understand the point but HOW to do it ?
I'm quite a shy person so do I just show up at his/her office hours and present myself ? Please share your tips/advices :)

definitely show up at office hours. Yes, you can show up randomly. But I find it easiest when you have a prompt - ie, something related to class that you want to ask about, whether it is about an assignment or discussion topic. Or, you can come up with a random idea, i.e. “i heard that you are an expert in so-and-so, and I’m really interested in that also, could you possibly tell me more about your experiences?” If you feel uncomfortable just showing up at office hours, some other options to get to know your professor is to just speak up in class - when he asks a question to the class, be the one to respond. Take an honors option with him (if available at your school). Or come up to him right after class (or right before) to ask him, it doesn’t have to be formally at his office hours. You can ask professors anything - whether it is about the class, help in finding research opportunities or jobs etc. Most professors are more than willing to help you out. Being shy definitely makes it more difficult, but the only way to get to know a professor is if you make the first effort - a professor is not really going to reach out to you first, especially since they have so many students to deal with already.

I’m really close to two of my professors and I am also a quiet person. What I did was ask them for help when I needed them and visited them during their office hours to ask them questions about my classes/related discussions.

Its was hard a first to muster the courage to talk to them but I wanted to do really well in the class so I told myself “how bad do I really want an A in this class?”

u jst got ta show up at there office owours n talk about tha class n ****

itz serious lee not 2 hard ya feel me

if u wnna impress them tell em ur stats mine are 6’2" 220lb 1% bodyfat 300lb bench for reps twenty tatts im tha realest str8 outta the gheto

People who try to get in contact with professors to improve their grade are idiots. You just need mild intelligence and good work ethic and you’ll be fine without pestering them during office hours.
If you have good questions that show you’ve studied and want to understand the material further, THEN office hours are great. It’d be a relevant question that could lead to other questions, etc.,

It’s unnecessary advice unless you’re thinking of grad/med school and need recs. Then just get in touch with prof’s that relate to your major. Go to office hrs, ask questions in class, get them to know your name during semester. Then show strong interest in joining their lab as a research assistant or lab assistant at the end of the semester. Keep in touch with them and they’ll have no problem writing you a rec when you request.

I’m a prof. We like it when people stop by during office hours.

Definitely schedule an office visit and ask the professor how you are doing. Also try to participate a little more in class, so the professor can match you face to your name.

Just be yourself, profs hate fake people. I would say just answer questions, ask questions, say funny things in class. that’s how I got to know my profs
