Well ... the title says it all. It looks like there is no really good way to do it except for a taxi. Do any current UChicago students have any input?

55 bus to Red Line
Red Line to Jackson, transfer to Blue Line
Blue Line to O'Hare

Plan on the trip taking 2 hours to be on the safe side.

Or . . . 6 bus to Michigan and Jackson. Walk two blocks west to get on the Blue Line. It will take about the same amount of time (maybe 15 mins less, depending on where you are when you start), but it will be prettier (the 6 bus goes up along the lake). Same cost.

This summer we used Omega Airport Shuttle service that we liked much better (and cheaper) than a cab. It has regular stops on campus.

How you would do so depends on the time of day, too. During morning and especially evening rush hour, a cab or the shuttle will take forever. I've even been on cabs to the airport only to bail and hop on the blue line.

So here are some pro and cons:

shuttle only runs once an hour and can get stuck i traffic, but the cost is reasonable

cabs can get stuck in traffic, are expensive at $60 or so with tip, and you can wait in a long line later in the evening. But they are door to door.

CTA can be confusing to navigate, involves dragging luggage from place to place (for connections), involves a long walk from the airport stop to any gate, but is cheap and reliable.

Personally, my preferred option is Midway airport.

Another suggestion is to rent a car. Hotwire has some great deals, i.e. I often get a car for under $20.00 a day. If you must fly into O'Hare (Midway is definitely easier and closer) try to do so away from rush hour and then the traffic to U of Chicago is not too bad. I have always had luck doing this and although parking can be difficult around campus, I have had luck finding a spot. At night there tend to be plenty of spots around to park in. So, this is a possibility for those who don't want to deal with the other alternatives. The rental car companies will give you excellent instruction on how to drive to the school.
