I’m carless and unfortunately, both of my parents work part-time during the weekends. I was just wondering if there was a train route / bus route there. I don’t mind how long it takes, I just want to be able to visit my parents at least 1-2 a month. (can’t miss out on home cooked meals hehe) I could however find a friend there that lives near me and get a ride from him/her. But I heard to own a car at UCSD, you have to pay $600 for parking permit and other fees. So the chances of finding someone with a car that ALSO lives near my home is very slim… Help me out! hehe thanks in advance.

Where do you live? There is a train that goes from SD to LA via Orange County (i.e. Fullerton). Hitching a ride with new friends would be a good alternative (and inexpensive, too!).

My roommmate goes home just about every other weekend. Take the 101 bus [with stops on Gilman by Geisel/VA hospital and North Torrey Pines by Revelle] to the Oceanside Amtrak. Plenty of people take the train.

That said, tons of people from the LA area go home weekends, so you can likely find someone who goes home alot and split for gas.

dont worry cadreaminnd...i live in colorado, so i definately wont be going home every weekend....i have family in San Fran, i wonder if there is a train that goes there....? i doubt it...ill most likely hang out on the campus, and the beach is right there too, so thats always a plus!

is anyone from claremont, ca? is there public transportation that can take me directly to ucsd?? i checked the amtrak site but it doesn't seem like there's a route...

I live in Glendora at the moment (5-10 miles West of Clarement from the I-210), and from what I've seen, the best way to get to UCSD without driving the whole way is to go to the Fullerton train station and taking the Amtrak to Solana Beach. You can get a deal from Amtrak for 10 trips (5 round trips) for $110; it may sound like a lot, but for $11 a trip, you're saving money because of gas prices.

Also, since I'm going to have my car in college, I'm prepared to be 'the driver' for most of my friends. Since we live pretty close to each other, I probably wouldn't mind driving you to Claremont on weekends when I go home--I'll just need some gas money :}

yeah I just had a great adventure travelling from nothern california all the way to san diego on amtrak trains and buses. definitely would advise it. also, my sister's friends who are third years at UCSD took the train home before they had cars down there, and they talk about the "train days" with affection. its a good way to get around if you want it to be.
