how to go about the optional essay?

i'm working on the essay about what your created. do i describe what i created or what?
how long is it usually?
any suggestions would be highly appreciated

I guess you could talk about how you created it, how you came up with the idea, etc. I wrote about writing & delivering a lecture (at a college) about my research. I think it was 300 or 400 words, I'm not sure though. I think you can do this one pretty much however you want as long as you loosely stick to the prompt. It is optional, after all.

I actually included an essay I had written for UChicago (I told them it was from another school, of course!). The original essay was 700 words, but I whittled it down to about 500, since I believe that's what their limit is.

you told them it was for another school? why would you do that?

also, did you guys write one for the second optional essay too? i don't know if it is too much for them to read.

thanks you, Perplexitudinous and Dally, for the inputs.

No problem.

Isn't the second optional essay for additional information? I did write a few notes there but I don't think you should use it unless there is something important you couldn't fit elsewhere or if you need to clarify something.

I would suggest you make use of all chances to describe who you are. The prompts are there for a reason, the more they know about you the better.

well, i guess writing about how I went to 4 different schools in a little over a years time might be important. but i'll try to keep it short, 2 paragraphs.

I don't know...I used all optional/additional info boxes plus some supplements...But apparently, adcoms did not like it... I'm not saying you shouldn't write additional information essay, but just know the limit... Don't "abuse their kindness" =)

Good luck

All my son put in the additional info box was some awards that hadn't fit elsewhere. Of course he was deferred so, maybe he should have put more there!

My recollection is the something you created essay can be about 500 words. My son talked about what he created, what the process was to create it (group project) and why he's proud of having been part of it.

hmm... it seems like people are split on whether to use the last optional box for essay

Use it to tell the Admissions folks anything you feel they need to know about you that isn't covered in the rest of the application. If you feel that it needs to be in essay format, fine. As long as what you include supplements and augments the rest of your app in a meaningful way, it will be helpful.

I'm with akdaddy and mootmom on this one. Those prompts give you opportunities to show various facets of your personality. Take advantage of the optional essay to say something that you don't feel is covered in the rest of your application. I can't recall what DD wrote in her optional essay but I know that it was from the heart and not what I expected at all. Your essays (or whatever you choose) help to paint a picture so take advantage of the opportunity.

thanks, everyone, i think i got a good grip on it now
