This is probably a stupid question, but I've searched through this forum for a thread on how to write cover letters but I couldn't find any, and quite frankly, I'm lost as to what to tell/ask my teachers!

Should there be a limit as to how much you write? What about format?
I've read some posts about telling teachers "what you want them to write in their rec" but what if you sound too demanding or out of line?
I know there is no one right way to write them, but what is considered appropriate and inappropriate to include? Does it matter if they end up sending the recs in before you submit your application?

Did your teachers ask you to help them write the recommendations? Does your highschool have you prepare resumes/ brag sheets that the teachers can look at if they want to?

The college will start a file when they receive the first itme pertaining to you.

Search up "cover letter format" on google and follow the basic format. As for the actual content, my letter was 3 pages long! I included:

Due dates of each college's application in the order that they are due.

My explanation of why I wanted to go to each college.

My explanation of what I wanted to get out of college.

Lots of "thank you"s.

What I wanted my teacher to put in the rec. I basically said something like, "I know that you may have forgotten my achievements/progress in your class, or perhaps I did not convey myself enough, so here are a few things about me in and out of the classroom that can help you write my letter"

More "thank you"s.

Any special requests, like "please mail this letter early, etc."

cmbmom - only one of my teachers asked me for specifics (a resume, list of extracurriculars, etc.) but all my other teachers haven't. my hs doesnt require it or teach/inform us about the process at all. i'm first born in my family and will be first generation to attend college so i'm basically on my own. (except for this forum of course! :-) )

i have another question, the envelopes, stamps, etc. that you provide for your teachers, is all of that required for the counselor as well?? or does it depend on what your counselor asks?
