How to go to Downtown from USC?

<p>My mother and I plan on coming to USC on the 17th. She is going to leave on the 20th. Classes are not going to start until the 23rd. Therefore, we want to go to Downtown to spend those 3 days. How can we go to Downtown from USC?</p>

<p>Drive up Figueroa to take the LADOT #81 bus over on Figueroa or catch the Dash F line bus which runs downtown as well.</p>

<p>I personally liked taking the USC tram (free) to Union Station, and then you can take the Metro ($1.25 each way) from there. Red line brings you to Hollywood & Highland, among other places, and there are a few other lines out of there as well.</p>

<p>There are also “DASH” buses that run to & from campus. I believe they cost only $.25 each ride. They cover quite a bit of ground.</p>

<p>yipyip0901, You honestly may not want to go downtown. It’s mostly office buildings, there’s actually not much to do for visitors. You’re going to want to go to the beach at Santa Monica or Venice, Culver City, Studio City, Sunset Blvd., etc. Plenty to eat, see, do, and buy! LA is rather unique in having a boring downtown, but amazing place West of it. The farther West and closer to the ocean you get, the nicer it is!
Decide on a destination, and use google maps selecting public transportation. LA city buses are a fantastic resource at 1.25 per ride. Set backs are that getting from USC to western LA always require a transfer (google finds easy transfers, don’t worry) and getting anywhere fun takes an hour. But that bus ride is a great way to people watch and observe different parts of the city. Don’t be turned off by LA public transit!</p>

<p>einnob: As a freshman, I probably got off campus about a dozen times in a semester. Being unafraid of using the buses, as I said before, can get you places. I’m in the film school, and found out about several Q&A movie events in West Hollywood and a comedy show in Westwood, and I took the bus to them with friends. I also went to the beach in Santa Monica several times via bus. Having friends with cars is key to enjoying Los Angeles from USC. Of course having a car yourself is ideal, because without one you’re really limited, time-wise. But most freshmen don’t have one. I hitched with friends to the beach a couple times. I also joined the film frat, and we had several events, including a trip to Palm Springs, where I got off campus because the frat had a carpool. If you don’t have a car, and don’t make friends with them, getting around is simply dependent on how willing you are to try out the buses. It was my own initiative that got me around LA when I was completely car-less.</p>
