How to handle ED I and II?

My D is thinking of applying to one college EDI and, if rejected, immediately applying to another one ED II (by Jan.1). Should she apply to College #2 with the ordinary RD application in September-October and then notify them in December that she wishes to be considered for ED II? This would have the advantage that all materials would already be in their possession. Or would it be better to wait and send materials at the last minute for ED II?

Or should see apply ED II immediately to College #2 in September and then withdraw the app if accepted at the ED I school? Is that ethical and acceptable?

We are confused. Thanks for your help.

I'm also hoping that some knowledgable person will respond to this, and wondering if there's a comprehensive list somewhere of colleges that offer EDII and statistics regarding admissions through EDII.

I don't think it will matter to the school; any of the three plans would work. However, from your daughter's point of view, getting a waitlist or rejection from her EDI school ought to make her reevaluate her other applications. She'll have a better idea of how to present herself; it's a gradual learning process. So, you would want to have the second (and third, and fourth) application prepared, but not mailed until necessary.

For Nester: I don't know of a comprehensive list, but a lot of schools have their application info summarized on the common app website. There aren't that many EDII schools. When you have a list, do a search on the individual college websites for admittance statistics.

Keep track of deadlines for RD apps, too, because some of them occur before you'll hear EDI. I'd recommend that you wait until you hear from the EDI school before submitting information for EDII.

Little Mother,

Would it be advantageous to have the college board send SAT scores to the ED II school in advance of the application so as to be sure they have arrived on time?

My daughter applied ED 1 and we had her SAT scores and school recommendations and transcripts send to ALL of the schools she was considering applying to RD, if she didnt get into the ED school. You can do this before applying (without paying an application fee). The colleges are used to this, and will just start a file on the applicant, assuming the application will follow.

Yes, re SAT scores. You get a certain number sent free (8?) when you list them at the time of registration or within a certain deadline of registering/taking the test (ck CB website). Later you pay several $ per school to send additional. So it works well to send as many schools as you know you are interested in at that time. They open a file, as MOT said, and if you end up not continuing with the app, it's no problem.

Hi Nestor,

U S News college guide has a listing of schools , their ED deadline and admission rate. Hope this helps

I've seen it done all of the different ways, and see no difference in results. I think, however, that ED2 does not have the accept stats as ED1. I also recommend getting some rolling schools, and/or EA schools (if permitted) out early as well, since I saw some pretty devastated kids who were not accepted at their ED1 and 2 schools. An acceptance in the pocket can make a big difference in that case.

DO NOT simultaneously apply ED2 and ED1!!

First, it is a violation of many schools' rules. You can apply ED along with EA and RD at most schools.

Second, it will look weird to submit an ED2 app ahead of the ED1 deadline. They will ask themselves why you aren't applying ED1 in that case.

You should prepare the ED2 application and either send it RD (and then change status to ED2 later,) or hold it until you've heard from ED1 school and then send it in.

My D did this. She held ED2 app till ED1 answer was in. Then she sent ED2 and RD apps out all at once.

I second SBMom, this is what we were prepared to do. Board scores were sent in ahead, EDII was packaged and awaiting EDI. If your EDI is "well-wired" you may actually hear online a few days ahead of the stated date - we heard 4-5 days earlier than Dec 15.

We did send SAT scores to all schools and somehow even managed to do it for free--selecting which ones to go to which schools. D did the common app for all schools except her ED school and another that didn't accept the common app. I didn't realize that clicking the send button sent them to all the schools on the list, so away they went. The HS sent all teacher recs and transcripts in December, so supplements and fee payments were left until she heard about the ED school. Fortunately, we didn't have to worry about doing that, when she was accepted. She didn't have an EDII school in the wings, though, so you might have to wait on the common app for that school since you have to check off the box. It would look better to have it checked off rather than contacting the admissions office to change the status of the application from RD to EDII.
