I am still working for my bachelors in mechanical engineering, but my plan is to work a few years after graduation, and than earn my MBA. Is there anything that I should be doing in college to help make me more qualified for a top school (besides high GPA)? Is it extremely difficult to get into these schools? How good does my GPA need to be?

Some schools use some formula that factors in GPA + GMAT score.

There is generally some formula that adds points to your GPA for every so many points over X on the GMAT. That is true. Other than that, job experience and career aspirations will determine your entrance. They will look for leadership tendencies and a clear trajectory on how the MBA will enhance your career.
