I posted all of my stats (EVERYTHING) and I think people don't want to give advice if the title of your post isn't interesting enough.

"Too much information is listing every single club you've ever joined or attended. Only note clubs if you're an officer"

I disagree I think if it was something that you were in starting in like 4th grade and you're still in it, it DEFINATELY needs to go on there even if your not an officer.

I've only just been looking around this site, but I am already annoyed by something I see throughout the Chance Me threads. Don't hop into someone's thread and give a 2 sentence comment that doesn't help at all (That school and this school are pretty competitive, so I don't think you can get into them. Good Luck!), and then add a request to chance you back, as if you've done something for them and deserve something in return. A short, half-hearted comment doesn't help anyone.
My moral? Try to give real, meaningful input, and don't nag someone in their own thread to rate your chances in another.

hey guys, my main thing is I really want to know whether or not starting an organization ( after years of humanitarian work in the field) will look well. It is a huge tiime committment and I really want to do it but I don’t know how this will affect what colleges think of me. I hope you guys will check it out at riseagainstpoverty.org and just some other info is that I’m president of my class and was vp last year. I am captain of debate team and have 3 800 sat 2’s and a >4 gpa. Be glad to hear back from you guys

One thing that would really improve the chance threads is if people would give an idea of the schools, or at least the field, to which they are applying.

That would certainly help provide more directed replies.

To improve the chance thread, you can write out your essay and we can also use that to evaluate your chances =P

^ hahahaha

I dont think the 4.0, 2400 kids are just bragging. Maybe they were raised in different environments where many people are, by your standards, overachieving. Maybe their parents push them. Maybe they have seen friends get into top schools with only the minimum of 4.0 and 2400.

We shouldnt be so quick to judge people on the Internet. I know some things get annoying, but there might be reasons for people’s insecurities. I have spent lots of time looking up stats, but I dont feel like I know the Ivies, MIT, Stanford, etc., though admittedly that may very well be because theyre unpredictable crapshoots, but we hope that someone on this forum has some sort of inside connection to the admissions of these schools.

Most interesting thread, btw.

Maybe you should include a “What are my chances?” form. Therefore, all the threads would be easier to read for the members & it will ensure that the people making the threads will include only necessary information.

For improving your thread chance you write your own blog, essay and articles then repeat all this task. Then defiantly you improve your chance.

I’m new here, and I have a couple of questions.
What does “bump” refer to?
How long do “chance me” threads usually kick around for?
Are they ever “recycled,” or is that viewed as pushy?

Bump refers to what you call recycling, and it is annoying.

I think it’s ok to bump a thread if only two or so people responded. It’s only annoying when people bump threads when they have 5+ pages of responses.

This is a “funny” thread. Tokenadult; are you following this?

I’ll add a reminder here that the best way to make a good chances thread is to put it in the proper forum, the What Is My Chances? Forum, and not another forum.

what i’ve always wondered is how come the median SAT on collegeboard is around 500-ish, but here everyone seems to get 750-up!
are all ppl doing chances the top of the nation already? then why are they doing chances anyway? they’ll get into awe schools, of course
I think what bothers me if the similarity, and the feeling that everyone’s doing chances. and to be honest, only very few stand out (I was going to actually ask for chances when i first joined this, then gave up after reading 100 exactly-the-same posts)
that’s how admission officers feel, dont they?..

how do I get people to look at my threads? I just posted one about 10 minutes ago and no one has said anything. I am new to this :/

I feel like a five year old posting titles like " ChAnCe Me!!! AnD IlL CH@NCE U BACK "
…im just not going to do that

My personal pet peeve is when people rating others’ chances clearly have no idea what they are talking about.

If you’re predicting someone’s chances at 8 different schools but you’re only familiar with 5 of them, you should only include predictions for those 5. Otherwise, you will leave the applicant confused and other people annoyed (i.e., just because you’ve never heard of Middlebury doesn’t make it a “match/safety”).

@t9805193: well, ten minutes isn’t a long time. Wait say a couple of days. Bump it up if it gets off the first page. (but ONLY if it gets off the first page… otherwise it just looks annoying). also, chance others and leave a link at the bottom of your post.

The thing that bothers me most about chances threads is that students will take the replies as gospel and may be discouraged from applying. No one on these threads has a crystal ball. Everyone knows of students who are accepted/rejected with low/high test scores and GPAs, mediocre/outstanding ECs, etc. One important piece of information which cannot be conveyed on a chance me thread is the applicant pool from the OPs high school. Applicants compete not just with students from every corner of the globe, but also with their fellow high school students. My feeling is that students should go with their gut when it comes to applying to a school. Their gut speaks louder than any of the voices on the chance me threads.

This is a correct statement. Still the best way to find out your chances is actually to apply.
