How to improve writing MC?

I feel like there is something I'm missing when it comes to the Writing section multiple choice. I always feel like I do a great job on that section but I end up with a bad score. I have an ok essay score (always an 8) but the MC is slacking.

What is the best resource for reviewing/practicing the stuff that comes up on the MC questions?

I got a perfect multiple choice Writing score on the SAT and PSAT (too bad W doesn’t count for as much as the others). I took a short Princeton Review course, but that’s not necessary.

However, I will pass on a piece of advice from that instructor that helped me immensely. There is always something wrong with all but one of the answers. One is not better than the others–there is actually something grammatically wrong. This is true even in the rearranging sentences part.

So–get any sort of prep book. I’m not the greatest resource for picking one of those; other people know which ones are good.

All I can really give advice on is how you should work with whatever book you do get. What you should do is, do the questions. And then, review very carefully even the questions you got right! And what you should look for is, what is wrong with each wrong answer? There always is something wrong!! Find out what is wrong with each, and if you don’t understand what is wrong with each, try to ask someone else or work it out. Because you’ll start to see that it’s often the exact same stuff over and over again, and you’ll start to see how it works.

I’d say over half of them are subject verb agreement issues, and false parallelism. But what does that really mean? It means more when you actually do a lot of practice questions and make sure understand what’s wrong with every single wrong answer (I’m talking about the rearranging sentences–for the “find the error” I think most people know they should look up why it’s wrong). You’ll start to get a feeling for yourself for what these things are and how they work–much more than reviewing what subject verb agreement is in a textbook.

check out Grammatix/RR

After you learn the rules, it really just takes practice.
