Hello i am a junior in high school hoping for my GPA to reach 3.5 (hopefully). right now 3.36.

Freshmen year (father died)- ended year with a 3.05 GPA but started with 3.7
sophomore year finished with 3.32gpa
currently got Chemistry: B, B-, B+ Phys Ed: A,A,A College English: B+, B-, B Spanish 4: A-, A, A US History: B, B+, A- Algebra 2 A,A,A

my GPA was the same for first and second marking period but for third rose to 3.36. is it even possible to get to 3.5 by end of fourth marking period?

You can do the math yourself. But I assume what you are concerned about is how it will impact your chances for admission to college. Know that an upward trend will help you, most schools will take into account your sad loss during your freshman year, which has surely impacted your grades that year and during your sophomore year, and finally, there are many schools that would be happy to have a good student with a B+ average.

What can you do to help yourself?
a) have talk with your mom about what your family can afford for college tuition - that’s a big one.
b) make sure your teachers and guidance counselor know you - and that your guidance counselor especially is aware of your loss and how it impacted you. He or she can address it in their recommendation letter.
c) if you have assumed significant responsibility at home because of your father’s death, that too will count (and can replace many ECs that others have had time to do because they didn’t have those responsibilities.)
d) Spend time this summer researching schools, practicing for your SAT/ACT and working on some essays - you don’t want all of that to land in your lap during the fall of senior year.

Kids with only one parent often have to grow up faster, which can be tough, so don’t be too hard on yourself if it’s impacted your grades. Schools will get that.

I have a 3.4 as of third quarter and the only possible way I could get a 3.5 in 1 quarter is MAYBE keeping a 4.0. It might be possible if you kick it high gear beginning senior year you could get there.

If you do really well on SATs and take some SAT Subject Tests it might boost your chances at some schools that look for a little higher GPA but, GPA isn’t everything so don’t stress yourself about it too much! Schools look for a lot of different stuff.

At the moment I only have my mom too, even though my Dad is still alive. Schools tend be very understanding in those situations where you might not have all the time (and honestly won’t really be in the mood) to study 24/7 like some people do. A big difference is that you care! There a lot of people out there who don’t and colleges notice.
