How to increase the chances of finding a teaching job?

What criteria are most important for new graduates to find employment?
- GPA?
- Involvement in professional activities?
- Connections?
- Student teaching assignments?
- Resumes and interviews?
- Luck?

My daughter is just a freshman, but I know how tough the job market is. What can she do over the next 4 years to make herself the best job candidate possible?

What does she want to teach?

Secondary math.

All of the above, plus I would encourage tutoring or volunteer work with young people. The more hands-on experiences she has, the better her chances of getting a job. Start now. I would think her college would have listings of organizations that could use her help/expertise, like afterschool programs at elementary and middle schools.

Major in math while picking up the teaching certification…that way she has options…and a stronger content major, so she is ready to handle teaching the demanding courses down the road. As much tutoring at the MS/HS level as possible…voluteering at local HS math/academic competitions will help with networking. Internships/Summer jobs in math related fields will help her answer the inevitable “why do I have to learn this?” with authenticity, and will give her a hook in interviews. Best wishes to her!

Thanks for the great ideas, Dogwood and PlanAhead! I’ll pass them along.
