How to indicate first generation status?

Was the only way to indicate this by saying both your parents did not attend college? I did this, but that doesn't necessarily mean your first generation by any means...

Does columbia assume that?

Um… I don’t know because I’m not first generation. But I feel like marking that on the application seems like the only way to do it. Unless you want to talk about it in your essay. But that may sound a little to sob-story-like. It depends on how you word it.

Well, Columbia keeps track of its first-gen applicants. (17% or something like that). Just wondering how they do so

They can tell by the fact that you’ve left the college space for both parents blank.

it asks: parent’s highest level of education. just select: high school.

But how does this indicate first-gen?

What I am mean is, what if one of your GRANDparents went to college, but both parents did not go to college. Is that still first-gen?

very good point! when i posted i didn’t even read your elaboration. i just responded based on your thread’s title. sorry!

i kinda remember the application, and the only place where it would lend itself to first-gen indication is in the additional info section. i think…

you can indicated it under additional info.

Argh!!! I didn’t list it under additional info, i assumed they would think so if my parents were both high school grad’s. Argh!!!

they might still assume so

now you know what to do for regular decision schools :)
