How to indicate varying levels of time commitment in ECs?

In the Common App, it asks you to list your exctracurricular activities, positions held, time spent, accomplishments, etc. How exactly should you indicate levels of time commitment that changed as your position changed?

In my case, I'm trying to figure out how to indicate my involvement in my school newspaper. At first, I was writing 1-2 articles per month, totaling maybe 3-5 hours. Then, when I became editor-in-chief and formatter, I began spending in the neighborhood of 30-40 hours/month on the newspaper. What would be the best way to put this information in the Common App?

My guess would be to include that in the space they give you to talk about details and accomplishments for each activity. You could say pretty much what you told us here about your growth of time spent. Or if this is your most important EC, go even deeper into your growth in the bigger section that they give you to elaborate on one activity.

How about the hours per week and weeks per month section.

@BonPamplemousse - Yeah, I guess I could make that work. Thanks.

@jimmy - That would work if I only had one hours/week and weeks/month scenario…
