How to jump from a 2140 to +2350 ? ( essay and cr )

I scored a 1900 in may and then a 2150 in october; i studied 2 weeks earlier only, though.
I aim for +2350 in december; however, am unable to make any progress in both the essay portion and the passages in cr
I've scored a 6 in october, which brought me a 690 in the writing, though i made just 2 mistakes in the mcq's, and made about 6 mistakes in the passages in cr, with 2 left completion questions,which brought me a 680
Any advice ?

You have the advantage of having taken two tests that you can get back via the question and answer service. If you haven’t already ordered them it may be too late to be of any use by December as they take several weeks to come. But if you did, then you should analyze the specific types of mistakes you are making and target only those types. I will assist you if you want help analyzing your mistakes. I have the may test, but not the october one yet (which might be more important to you). Let me know if you have either test and then I can let you know what you should do.

If you’re trying to get 2350+, you’re going to need to study for a helluva lot longer. I’ve been studying on and off for about a year and I don’t always hit 2350+.

I agree with @Smargent‌ I’ve been studying off and on over a year now (and teachers tell me I have an advantage because I read a lot), and I’ve only just been able to hit 2300+ semi-consistently.

Are you absolutely sure about 800 math? How many do you get wrong in CR, typically?

Do you guys know how much the essay is weighted for the writing?

My SAT breakdown had me at a 720 subscore for writing, and I got an 8 on the essay, so I’d really like to improve that for the december test. How to improve that as well? OP and I are in the same situation, I want to hit 2350 as well. Someday.

@SKTT1Impact I know that a essay score of 10 is around 130-140 points.

@SKTT1Impact‌
You’d need a 12 to get an 800 at the base score of 720.

At a high base level (700+), on a typical curve, 8 is a neutral score - it neither raises nor lowers your writing score. For each point away from 8 (up or down) you gain or lose approx 20 points. So for an extra 80 points you need 80/20 = 4 points higher than 8.

@Czeska, that makes a lot of sense; thanks. I didn’t know it worked like that, with the mean essay grade at 8 and adding points for above and below distributions. Yeah, I did mess up on some of the MC, but it’s by far my lowest part of the test; my reading/verbal is a 1550, so I have lots to improve on in writing it seems. Although, I’ve always been a strong writer according to my teachers, so it’s a mystery to me why my essays keep coming back as average. I fill up all two pages like CC says to do and everything, haha.

It’s not just about quantity. You must be mindful of these problems that are common among 8 scores:

1) weak thesis statement

Don’t just give your position. You should give a reason why.

2) not enough context in introduction

Give some background and importance to the topic

3) no topic sentence in body paragraph

Opening sentence should introduce your example and connect to thesis statement

4) rushed conclusion

Conclusion should be substantial and mention current state of affairs and future trending

I’m in the exact same situation. The December SAT will be my first, and I just want to get the SAT over with… I generally score 750+ in math and 750+ in writing, but I do poorly on CR (670-720). I usually miss 2 sentence completion and about 5-8 passage questions. What can I do to get a little boost to 700+?

Not much you can do for sentence completion - you either know the words or you don’t.

But for reading comp you should focus on tone. Every answer has either a positive or negative tone.

@Czeska, thanks. Those are all important points I’ve looked over in the past; particular with topic sentences and a strong conclusion. I’ll be sure to include those in my next essay, and hope for the best.

Am good enough in Math. Last exam i made just one mistake in a medium question. I bet if it wasn’t for concentration, i would’ve scored an 800.
In CR, generally, i make about 4 mistakes in the passages and leave about 1 or 2 completion questions
The essay also affected my essay greatly. My raw score was 48 or 47, but my essay was 6, so i scored a 690, which, of course, would’ve been 790 - 800 if i scored a 10 or 9.

Unfortunately, i didn’t order a QAS

Hi there - I got 2110 in January and 2340 in November, with minimal studying in between. in december I got 760 for CR and 780 for writing, with an 11 on the essay. Here’s my advice:
CR

 1. Know the sparknotes 1000 common SAT words - it’s excellent
 2. Read a lot. News, books, whatever. Practice is actually so, so important! Always play Devils advocate and eliminate answers to make sure your answer is 100% correct!

W

 1. You must answer the question properly. Don’t paraphrase the question. Answer it. Present your point!
 2. Don’t use irrelevant or cliched examples. No einstine, rosa parks, mother terisa. Use your own examples, or ones from current affairs
 3. Answer the question in your thesis statement. Eg: my interaction with the world taught me the importance of upholding moral integrity, which cannot be achieved through…
 4. Be concise. Plan. You have enough time to write.
 5. Correct grammar!

Yo. I went from a 2180 (730 cr, 750 math, 700 writing) in October to a 2390 (800,800,790 (10)) in November, also with minimal studying in between (only essays and relaxation).

 1. Words smart vocabulary book
 2. Write an essay a day, it only takes 25 minutes (Essays and writing sections are also my weak point)
 3. It seems that you have the latent ability for a near perfect score. All you need to do is care about every, single question on the test. I’m a perfectionist, but for the Nov. SAT, I ramped up my pedantry an extra notch.
 4. Make sure you get a lot of rest. Sleep = stamina = greater ability to nitpick

@shellbear
Thanks a lot :slight_smile: I really appreciate it.

@CastawayMA
Thanks a lot too :smiley:
Am a perfectionist as u said; am actually aiming for a 2400 in December, but i wrote +2350 to appear more realistic
Am unable to make any progress in the passage based questions in CR; i dunno y. There’s no specific type of questions that I make mistakes in; they vary. Am good enough in math and writing (mc portion ), but bad enough too in the essay portion :disappointed: , I started writing an essay daily already, but just a few days earlier to be honest; however, i can’t notice any change :disappointed: i hope i can write well in the exam day, i dunno how, though -_-
