for those of us that bring musical instruments (which can be VERY expensive), or other things that are valuable, how can we keep them safe? lol do we have to bring a safe?

you can rent a safe...there should be some kind of brochure that comes in the mailing with the refrigerator stuff. i forget how much it costs (about $150ish) but it works well and can fit 2 laptops, a ps2, etc. all together. they also encourage you to buy a lock for your laptop so you can tie it down to something in your room. i guess for your instruments you could get a lock for the case or use a bike-lock-chain thing to tie it down to a post on your bed.

wow...thats intense...are these locks necessary?

wouldn't just locking your door work?

Yes. Many people live their door open without being in the room and I've never heard of anything being stolen.

no--personally i don't think locks like that are necessary. i don't keep anything in the safe in my room and i don't have a computer lock, but my roommate is exactly the opposite. either way, we're just always sure to lock the door when no one is in here. people do leave their doors open/unlocked all the time, but i guess that just comes down to how you grew up (i'd recommend locking--and RA/GA's second this.)

No safes are needed. Just make sure your door is locked. Even if you don't lock it, it's usually pretty rare for people to come in and take stuff. But of course, it's better to be safe. Just keep a door locked :P

how do you keep your things safe from your roommate?

I go to Penn. Everythings safe. The people on your floor/in your dorm are good kids just like you, and your friends usually on your floor, they won't steal stuff.

I've kept my door open with nobody in the room for hours, with my ipod clearly in sight on my desk and my computer, and nothing has ever happened.

chocoman: Sorry but I have to disagree. Just because someone goes to Penn does not mean they lack the potential to steal. On my floor in my dormhouse last year, there were a few vandals who snuck around and broke things, scribbled on doors/walls, broke exit signs, etc, although these people were indeed few in number. My point is, not everyone is trustworthy. Thefts are not unheard of, but in most cases it is the result of someone leaving things unguarded or out in the open. It takes literally less than a second to lock the door and that's usually all you need to keep valuables safe. You just can't tell who will leave your stuff alone and who will consider stealing.

Everything isn't safe, but you shouldn't get paranoid...just lock your door. It's that easy.

and coddoc...you're a cynical mother facker.
