How to know if engineering is for me?

The reason engineering sounds appealing to me is that I like challenges/critical thinking, making things, and math/science are my strengths. However, I’m still hesitant to major in it. When did you guys realize that you wanted to major in engineering? Do you feel happy with your choice?

Why are you hesitant?

Honestly, I don’t know. I guess its self doubt about my ability and I’m scared that I may end up not liking it as much as I thought.

Well you ,might need to try it to see. Generally it’s easier to transfer out of engineering than into it due to the course sequencing. Tip - since freshman engineers usually have lower GPA than hs, watch out for schools with high GPA requirement for transfer to other majors and/or scholarship retention.

Take calculus, physics, chemistry courses offered in high school, if you do well in these and if possible do well on AP tests … you have sort of proven your ability to do the freshman course load. If you can find some engineering related clubs … again, if you have a problem solving mindset, ability to solve word and real life problems, you may be very well suited to engineering.

Also be careful, some schools require very high GPAs to enter engineering which may be difficult for some (but then again, if you don’t do well in freshman engineering classes, it only gets harder from there).

I love engineering design work and always did well in math and science. Obvious career path … although I did almost apply to med school.

I’ve taken AP Bio(4) and am taking AP Calc AB and AP Physics C Mechanics. My grades in all three are really high. I’m planning on doing AP Calc BC and AP Chem is possible next year. There was also an engineering competition that my school is taking part in and I’m doing that this year. All of my strengths and aptitudes seem to fit engineering perfectly, so that’s why my hesitancy is confusing me too. I guess I’m intimidated by engineering coursework in college.

Well the work is gonna be hard. But it sounds like you have the right skills and background. You’ll know more after you delve into the senior year classes. For now, try to enjoy you hs ride and not worry too much about picking a major right now.

I agree with what everyone else has said. Engineering is hard, but the rewards are good. You sound like you’d be a great fit and if you aren’t, it’s easy to transfer out. Good luck!

Try taking the required math and physics courses required for engineers your freshman year. If you can handle those, there will be an engineering major which you will be able to get through, though not necessarily the type you ideally hope for.
