How to know which Grad Schools to apply to?

So im currently a Junion doing a math major. For my undergrad, I only applied to one local state university, got accepted and done deal.

For my Grad School, I want to be more ambitious, given that I been able to maintain a 4.0 math major gpa and 3.88 general gpa.

So I decided that when the time comes next year to apply to Grad School, I want to apply to 8-10 schools. I want to have a couple admission letters with financial offers, sit down and choose which one I want to go.

The thing that has been bothering me is that I dont know which schools to apply to and I have no way of knowing how to filter out some universities etc. How do I go about choosing those 8-10 schools I would like to apply to? Yes, I know the obvious answer would be "those schools you want to go to" but the thing is I dont really know.

How do I go about this?

You need to think about what you want to research in grad school and find schools with professors that do work that interests you.

Talk to your professors at school about the subjects that interest you and what schools might be good for that.

Consider geography, weather, and all that sort of stuff.

Ask your professors if they know any profs at the schools you’re considering. Then, talk to those profs about what the school’s like, what the departmnet is like, etc. Just informal; not an interview.

Depending on what type of grad school program you want to do (math, obviously, but I’m sure there are variations on that theme), see if before graduate school you can get a job related to that interest. People at the job might have advanced degrees and you’ll get further guidance (and LORs) from them.
