I am not going to be applying to NHS in high school, as I can’t afford the time it requires because I am doing other things, but I was wondering how to log hours for college applications. Should I still be using the NHS sheet of paper (signature, hours, title, description, etc.) or should I do it some other way? Also, I do many volunteering things that apply to the major I’m considering (computer science). Because I’m a sophomore in high school, I’m not really sure how I should be preparing to talk about these volunteer activities in my applications. Any tips on that? I’m also unsure how to show my commitment to my community without doing NHS.
Just keep a spreadsheet or something. It’s only for your own records.
Log them yourself. Use google sheets or something. NHS is not the end all be all in volunteering, in fact many students apply without it.
And colleges take your estimates on your vol hours. And in general, they just want to see that you’re involved, not that you’ve passed some arbitrary no. of vol hours. No school needs a SINGLE vol hour, you know.
HS students over-estimate the importance that colleges put on vol service.
The Common App doesn’t ask about community service. It asks for a list of your extracurricular activities, which may include service-related stuff.
