How to make apparent the better internship.

Hello all,

I'm back again with some more questions. This time, they’re of a different nature.

I'm looking for help with what I should look out for when finding work at a law firm. I want to spend the summer doing clerical work for free at a local law firm, but there are so many in my area - we have old ones, new ones, big ones, small ones - what would be a good thing to look out for? Should I go around a speak to the attorneys and focus on ones I think I get along with, or should I go to the first one I see and accept a position if offered one there?

Now, obviously, I should go into a firm that focuses on my area of interest. But, unfortunately, there are only 2 or 3 law firms in my area that focus on patent law, and I know most of the attorneys there and know that they don't really need any help around the firm. So I'm branching out to encompass every firm in my area since I don't have a specific area of practice to focus on! Since I am usually very focused on patent attorneys in my area, I feel like I am in very unchartered territory and could really use some advice.

Should I jump into any firm, or are there things I can look out for to make sure my experience is the best one available?

Thanks for all the help. I hope I can get some good answers and hopefully from those with past experience on this sort of thing.
