Hello All!
Later this summer I am planning on traveling to New Haven and taking a tour of Yale. So far I've signed up for an Information Session and Campus Tour. I want to know if there are any other must see sites at Yale or things I should make sure I do when I go to make the most of the visit. It's a two hour drive where I'm coming from.

Thank You.

Also, If anyone has advice for visiting colleges in general, it would be greatly appreciated.

I also think you should get rid of the big H, but that’s up to you. It’s not ideal to visit any college while classes are not in session, but sometimes schedules make it necessary. Any campus will seem a bit “dead” when students are not around, so take that into account. As far as a visit to Yale when classes are out, walk around, go to the Art Gallery (if it’s open). You’ll have a car, so you can drive down to Wooster Square and have pizza at Pepe’s or Sally’s.

I disagree about going to Toad’s–it tells you nothing about what Yale is like, other than the fact that a somewhat cruddy club is available.

Thanks @Hunt . Lol what’s the big deal about my H? Yes this shows I’m interested in Harvard, but I’m also interested in Yale, and a bunch of other schools. I see no reason to get rid of it. I’m applying to college next year and who knows maybe I’ll be interested in yet another school and then I’ll make that one my profile picture. :D

Ask questions, connect with current students you can talk to in the future, eat at some local restaurants (new haven is famous for it’s pizza and burgers), and hang out in the city.

I actually coincidentally just took a tour with my friend who was considering colleges yesterday. While the tour itself was great, it tended to talk alot about the history of Yale, it’s dorms (residential college system), and famous figures and such. If you want to know more about things such as the classes, student life, and other college student things I highly recommend you talk to a current student.

When you write things like the “Why Yale?” essay (I am assuming there is one; I never applied) you want to stand out, so you don’t want to talk about the same thing everyone else knows. Good luck!

lolololololol don’t go to Toad’s, That’s a terrible idea.

Do talk to whatever students are left on campus and see how you click with them. Ask someone for directions (even if you don’t need them) or a restaurant recommendation. I think you’ll find that most Yalies are more than willing to take the time to talk to you, which is more than you can say about our friends in Cambridge…

Just went to Yale today. I have to say I really like it. I heard a cute and endearing story from the admissions officer about her experience with move in day and her own residential college. The campus looks like a freakin’ castle! LOL Also it was so easy to get around and the students I did get to talk to on campus had pretty much the same thing to say about how great it is there and how its the people that make the college.

The students are just coming back to campus. Some pre-orientation programs came over the weekend. Move in day for freshmen is Friday, August 22. Probably not the best day to see the campus or take a tour because it will be pandemonium. Classes start on August 27 so if you can come then, you can see the classes during Yale’s “shopping period” which is the first 2 weeks of the semester.

I was there Saturday moving my D in. I saw lots of tours but I think all the students that were there were either the counselors for the programs (whose focus was on the new students coming in), a bunch of brand spanking new freshman and a few other random folks.

My D got her best view of campus when we went President’s weekend. A holiday for us but a regular school day for them. She got to see classes in action and the professors were very nice about letting her sit in.
