How to move from home to college

I know it's fairly simple to bring your luggage with you in a car if you go to a college that's at most 3 hours away, but what about colleges that are 7 states away? Do you take a plane, train, or a car still? I would say a train since I would think train rides are more fun, especially if you are just visiting family on winter break, but would a train be efficient enough to afford? How did you move from home to college, and then how on holidays?

Give us the city of origin and the destination city.

trenton, nj to DUKE, nc or chicago

I know a lot of people that have moved cross country with only 3 suitcases and a backpack. They bought stuff like sheets/toiletries/decorations upon arrival. It’s not as big of deal as it seems. For breaks 1 suitcase (or even just a backpack if you have clothes at home) should suffice.

Here’s how we moved our D from California to Indiana: We shipped a big box of clothing in advance, as well as school supplies which we figured might be picked over in the stores by the time we got there. For room furnishings, we went to Bed Bath & Beyond; they have a deal where you select stuff at your local store and then pick it up in the college town. We took the rest of her clothes on the plane with us; had to check a couple of large bags. Then when we got there, we shopped locally for toiletries and large items like fans, storage containers, etc.

I took a car, but I stay here year round. My freshman roomate lived like 1000 miles away and got his stuff shipped to school…he flew.

Holidays you have to fly, unless you bring your own car.

Duke is 7 1/2 hours, Chicago 12 1/2, both doable with easy freeway driving in a day there and a day back. Your folks can’t do that twice a year? If I could do it for family vacations, I would do it for this.
