How to move quickly in CR section

By far, my CR section is pretty bad. Its about a 630 right now, and iw ant to get it up to atleast 680.

I think its because i have been taking too much time on the reading questions. The sentence completions are a breeze, but when i start reading the passages, and eventually the questions, i look at my watch and i have 5-6 minutes left for the test. What am i doing wrong? If you tell me to skim the passage, what does skimming mean?

Thanks for the help.

I had a 670 on my CR on my first SAT attempt. I only did CR sections in preparation for my second take. If that’s the only score you really want to improve, then don’t clutter your brain with Math and Writing. If you are satisfied with those scores, most schools superscore. I was able to bring my CR to a 730, and even though my math and writing fell, my superscore went up 60 points.

There are two ways of approaching a passage imo

1) Reading the whole passage once then looking at questions. Skim (ie put your finger under each word and just keep moving it, your eyes will follow) and just try and underline anything you think may be important. Then quickly look at each questions and isolate ones that you can answer right away, then look back at specifics in the passage (and the stuff you underlined!) for the ones you can’t.

2) Look at each question first. If you see anything saying paragraph x, or line y, then read that part and go back to the question. By reading these small chunks you can answer those questions right away, and then piece together the bigger picture. If anything say “The overall …” then just skip it until you’ve read the whole passage in these chunks.

I’m just spewing techniques we talked about in my SAT class. Hope this helps.

I have also been working to improve my CR score. The best way to approach the reading questions in my opinion has been to read the passage as you answer the questions.

For example:

 • Question 1 refers to paragraph 1. Read paragraph one then answer question 1
 • Question two is in line 20. Read from end of paragraph one to line 20 then answer question two.

Skip any questions about the passage as a whole and go back to them at the end.

thanks for the advise

i’d thank him for the advice.

here’s advice: take the ACTs. :)

my 650 CR magically turned into a 36 on the ACT reading

^ What’s the major difference between the SAT CR and the ACT reading? I though they both test how well you “comprehend” the passage.
