How to narrow down my list?

Okay, so I have a long list of schools that I would love to apply to, but I have no clue how to narrow it down. I currently have 12 schools on my list, my mom requested that I make it 10, but I don't know how. Each school on my list has all the stuff I want, it's a mix of reaches, safety, match, and financial safety schools.

I would love to get any help, or advise that is out there.

If a list of my schools will help you help me, then here it is:

-Northeastern University
-Suffolk University
-Clark University
-Boston University
-Quinnipiac University
-Emerson College
-Syracuse University
-UMass Amherst
-Quinsig (my local CC. It's my financial safety as well as my mega safety)
-College of Mt. Saint Vincent (once again my extreme safety and financial safety, as in i'll pay like nothing)
-University of Rhode Isalnd
-New England School of Communications

So that is my list. Please help!

Thanks :)

Oh, and I plan on majoring in Broadcast journalism

Offer to pay the application fees with your own money, for whatever two additional schools you want, and keep all 12 in play. From my neck of the woods in CA, that’s only about 2 more schools than the average total anyway.

Yeahh I agree. You should keep them all. Applying to colleges isn’t something really you want to risk skimping on.

Thanks for the advice.

I’ll keep them all then

^__^

Does the community college need to be applied to early (along with the other schools), or can you just enroll at will later if next April does not give you a four year school that you want to go to and can afford? If you can enroll at will later, then you do not need to apply to it along with the other schools (so leaving you with 11).

If there are any other schools that you would not prefer to attend over your two safeties, then don’t bother to apply. Same for any schools where the net cost after non-loan financial aid is unlikely to be affordable.

the CC can be applied to whenever, along with my second safety. But if I want a scholarship to my 2nd safety school I need to apply early.

So that brings down my list to 11. :)

Suffolk and Northeastern are very similar in environment, so choose one with the program that mostly matches what you want. Just as an FYI, both are excellent schools with similar reputations in Boston, but outside of greater Boston, Northeastern has a much better reputation than Suffolk, so keep that in mind if you are interested in working outside of Boston.

Also, UMass tends to be people’s financial safety, but you seem to have that in MSV, so that could be another one to take off the list.

If you are concerned that eliminating schools will reduce your chances to be accepted somewhere, check out the list of schools that are free to apply to and add some of those onto your list if you want.

Thanks.

I have no clue what MSV means.

I have NEU on there because of the co-op, not because of the major. In truth they do not have the exact major for me. But I love the campus, the classes, and the co-op, and I like the “brand name” affect that they have. Suffolk, I do not like the campus as much. But they have my exact program, and I have a higher chance of getting in.

is there a list of schools that are free to apply to, on CC?

MSV is Mt. St. Vincent.
This is the list of free app schools: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/444532-list-colleges-free-apply.html

You do have a much better chance of getting into Suffolk than NEU because so many more people apply to NEU than Suffolk. If Suffolk offers your exact program, maybe eliminate one other school that you have a lower chance of getting into that doesnt have as strong of a program as Suffolk.

Thank you for the link.

And thanks for your help ^_^

Also, based on where you live, it would not be difficult for you to visit Clark, Suffolk, NE, BU, and Emerson. Going for an info session can give you a much clearer picture of the environment, requirements, and atmosphere of a college. If you can schedule it properly, you could visit two or three of the Boston schools in a day.

I’ve already planned a trip to BU. I’ve gone to NEU, I see Clark all the time, but I have yet to go on an official tour (which I should do). I’ll also make sure to plan an Emerson and Suffolk trip during the school year.
