How to obtain residency in Virginia in order to obtain the Virginia Tuition Assistant

Hi,
I am from out of state, however have lived in Va for 4 months now (and spring when I am enrolled to start will be 6months)...I understand I need a valid Va license and proof of paying taxes ie;water bill, or pay stub...but what if I live with my parents who have been residents in Va for 20 years? My other question is...will the fact that I live with my parents yet have two dependants affect my grant ? If so how? and what type of appeal would support this?
thanks

Your question is a bit confusing. It sounds like you are an independent student with dependents of your own, who has chosen to move back home with your family in VA. That being the case, you would have to follow the SAME guidelines to establish residency as any other person trying to do so in VA. Those are on the college website. That you are independent for both tax and financial aid purposes very much affects this, I believe. It doesn’t matter where your parents live.

Agree with what Thumper said (of course).

Also it usually takes at least a year to establish residency, depending on the State. Often you cannot establish residency while you are attending school or it is more difficult to establish residency while you are attending school. It is important for you to check these rules out with your state. If you cannot establish residency while attending school then you may want to consider waiting until fall to start.

Good luck.
