How to pack for college

How did/will you transport your clothes or anything else you're taking?

I heard some people use black trash bags as garment bags so they wouldn't have to deal with folding them in a suit case. I was thinking to lay mine flat in my suitcase with the hangers still attached.

Suitcases, tote bags, and backpacks. Most of the bags will go home with my parents.

I was just thinking of putting them all in a box or something, because I don’t really care… but my mom brought me this giiiant duffle bag one day, so I guess I’ll use that too. But there’s no way all my clothes are gonna fit in just one bag, so I’m still gonna stick with using boxes, pretty much for everything… haha

@SerenityJade-Totes are a good idea! I will give them a try.

I packed my clothes in a big duffle bag, and then everything else was in boxes. If you’re driving there, then you have more flexibility to use things like trash bags or whatever gets it into the car. If you’re flying, you’re going to have to do some combination of suitcases and boxes.

When I was packing, I also used clothes and towels as padding around fragile things or as filler around pots and pans that didn’t fit into a box nicely. It can be a way to maximize space, and clothes don’t add too much weight to the box.

And there’s always this: [how to pack clothes for moving](http://www.instructables.com/id/how-to-pack-clothes-for-moving/)

I packed clothes and shoes in suitcases, towels and bed sheets in bins and everything else in boxes.

We bought the FRATKA storage bags from IKEA. $3 each and they are super strong and sturdy. And we got the DIMPA storage bag for laundry.

Holy crap. That’s the same thing I’m doing.

Word for the wise, if you have things that will need to be on hangers at college, don’t even bother taking them off at home. Just take the whole load of them, put them in the back seat or something then put them in the cart during move in and then simply hang them up in your room.

Saves time and effort.

I’m using old fashion cardboard boxes…lol I feel so out of place.

As I’m flying in, I will bring everything in two little suitcases. Plus maybe some plastic covers from when I go shopping in Walmart.

Where do you guys plan to store the suitcases afterwards? Seeing as there’s very limited closet space, I will probably end up using my suitcase as more storage. I was just wondering what other people were planning to do with them since they can eat up a lot of space.

my suitcases will go back home with my parents

I’m probably folding them and putting them on clothes hangers, then boxing them. That way, I can just hang them up when I get there

As for where to put the suitcases in the dorm room: We bought a set of bed riser to store them under the bed. We picked up the one that raises the bed 5 inches. There was another set that raises 7 or 8 inches.

My suitcases are going bak home as well. I won’t have any suitcases in my dorm room.

I put a lot of clothes in my laundry bag, and I used a suitcase which my Dad took home after he drove me.

I kept my carry on suitcase (and dufflebag) under my bed, and since I used boxes for everything else, I broke them down and put them behind by bed or wardrobe/dresser. That way I still had them when I needed to move out at the end of the year.

I primarily used plastic reusable boxes from walmart to store most of my stuff. This made it super easy to stack in the car. Then I used them as storage in my dorm and kept them under my bed.

For my hangable clothes I cut a small hole in the center of the bottom of a black trash bag. I used that as a covering by putting the hanger part through the hole. It kept my clothes organized and easy to transport.

I also used a variety of bags (like duffle bags, laptop bags, and suit cases) to transport stuff. I was going to use the bags during the year, anyway, so why not have then multitask?

Breakable items were wrapped in plastic walmart bags and stored in a plastic box labled “breakable”. Plastic bags will be one of your best friends in college, so it’s nice to have an abundance, anyway. You can reuse them as trashcan liners.

We took my mom’s suv and packed it full. The heavy items on bottom, then boxes, breakable boxes, bags, and then hangable clothes lay flat on top. Bring an extra car as needes, if you have family traveling along. Lastly, don’t buy everything before hand. Just bring the bulk of your dorm supplies. The extras can be bought at target or walmart on move in day.

The lazy route aka UPS.

Yeah it was pricey, but I don’t feel like lugging around huge boxes(including a 47 inch TV) and suitcases around campus. My stuff will be waiting for me on Move In Day.
