How to pay to study overseas

I'm planning on going either to London School of Economics or University of Manchester to study economics. The problem is both school will cost at least $40,000 per year and I'm not sure how I can afford to study at either university (being an international student) without taking out a lot of loans. Degrees are 3 years in England which helps cost-wise but I probably will need to pay at least 120k. What are some ways I can pay for college overseas?

Secondly, I am wondering if it is worth it financially worth it to study at LSE. My situation is as follows: I just took my IB exams and have a predicted score of 39 points which is enough for both those schools; however, I need to take Calc II in order to get accepted into the BSc Economics program. I was set on attending Michigan State next year however with the offer from LSE and Manchester I am highly considering going to community college and taking the required Math class and then attending LSE. MSU would cost around 80k in total. Studying overseas would therefore cost me an extra 40k. I plan on going into investment banking. MSU would not give me very good job placement while LSE has 70% of its students with a MSc in Economics go into Investment Banking. Would the 40k be worth it and if yes how would I pay for it?

If you are a US citizen, you can use Stafford Loans for approved schools overseas – but that is only going to get you about $5500 for freshman year. The rest of the money would have to be borrow through a private lender, with higher interest rates and a co-signer required.

Other than that, I don’t know of any scholarship or grant that can be used overseas (and I have researched it for the past year). Neither school offers money to internationals students and every outside scholarship that I have looked at requires you to study in the US.

No, I do not think that any college is worth borrowing 120K (if you can even get someone to loan it to you).

How much is MSU going to actually cost you? If your costs are actually 80K at MSU, I would suggest you look elsewhere – it definitely isn’t worth 80K.

Community college for the first two years is always a good option – and going overseas for your master’s is a better option.
