How to play ED 1 and ED 2?

I’ve chosen my ED 1 school which is a long shot but I want to give it a try. I am also ready to submit my ED2 choice now. Should I apply REGULAR DECISION now for my ed2 choice and then change it to ed2 if I am not accepted to my first choice. Is it better to submit now RD and switch it for to ED2 later or wait until after the results come in for ED1

no have it ready to go, then send it ED2 if you get deferred/rejected.

There is no advantage to getting an application in before the deadline so it is fine to wait until you get your ED1 decision before deciding how to apply to your second choice (ED2) school. If you get deferred from your ED1 school you may choose not to apply ED2 anywhere.

so you would wait on all of your applications except for early action until then?

My D applied to her top school ED. She held off on sending in her other applications (although they were mostly complete) with the exception of 2 EA schools and 1 rolling school.

I’d say the more changes you make the more likely things are to get mixed up. Sending it in RD and then switching to ED2 is a change and something could get lost in the changes.

My D applied to a super reach ED. She also applied to 3 EA schools. She is going to send in apps to 2 others by Dec. 1 for merit consideration. She will have 3 other apps to send. One might be an ED2 school, might be regular. Other 2 are regular. Those 3 won’t be sent until after she hears back from ED school in December.

just curious what ea schools did she like? I found that hard to find as Michigan felt too big for me.

You also need to think about what you will want to do if you get deferred from your ED1 school. Will you want to see what happens in the RD round or apply to another school ED2? Some schools reject a lot of applicants at ED1, so a deferral means you are still in the running for a spot. Some schools defer a large portion at ED. You should weigh that as you plan your ED2 or RD strategy

yea, that’s tough. I’m not sure if I can wait on a deferred status and not take advantage of ED2
