Howdy all.
I'm slated to take the AP French Language in May, but my school doesn't offer the class, so I've been prepping on my own. I have the Barons book, but I don't like it. I have also used about.com for grammar help, and I like it, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a good source to study. I think I'm going to be blown away by this test--I may be out of my league.

do you have a french teacher at your school that you can speak to? cause it can help if see listens to you pratice orals. I think the barrons book has picture sequence sample questions. On the AP language test you have to speak for 1 min on the picture sequence, it'll be nice if u have a french teacher to critique you on that Maybe use another AP book if u'd like and write essays on the sample prompts (or use barrons) .. and ask a teacher to critique it for you. it really doesnt make a differnce what book but getting practice on the essays will help. The grammar i think you're website would work for u. Or if there is no teacher to help you, just someone that you kno speaks fluent french can help you too.
I was kind of in the same situation you were in last year.. my school does have an AP french class.. but its horrible... pass rate for hte last 5 years was 0. All we did was practice out of a AP practice book.. whihc wasnt even a very good one. haha.. i managed to pass. a three though... better than the 1 i was expecting... and i didnt even do much outside studying..just took it with what i had managed to learn in three years. I guess if u have a pretty good base in french, you can at least score a three. everyone told me i wasnt going to pass, so kinda lost hope. But good luck! It's quite possible to pass..:)

Thanks for your help m3ssi. I am currently working with my French teacher, but she has very little experience with the AP test. She's helped a bunch, and I'm starting to record sample speaking and give her sample essays for critiques.

do u have any other questiosn about the test? like structure of the test and stuff? i'll try to answer any questions. My french teacehr didnt have a lot of experince with the AP test either.. tats why she taught out of the AP book... -_- she was a college teaceher who just started teacehr high school french last year.

no questions about structure, but if you have any tips: make sure you know the conditional, or is que vs. qui on the test a lot, etc. I would be extremely grateful.

oh yea. last year's ap prompt for the essay part was on if famous people have a duty to the public to act a certain way, or something like tat. i dont remeber the phrasing. but i remeber i writing about how some pop singers have a lot of influcence on how preteens act and dress. (just an idea for you about what a real AP prompt is like)

good...thanks

well on my test last year... que vs qui didnt come up alot.. in the fill in the blank part with connection words. I would say DEFINATELY know conditional.. and the different types.. past conditional, plus que parfait... tehy like to ask those on the conguating verb ones -_- horrilbe.. never got that far on my studies last year.. but i'd still keep in mind que and qui.. casue ter are a few on it.. so you shoudnt jsut igore it

that's a shame, because qui vs. que was something that I knew, and the more complex verb tenses is something I don't

ugh yea.. i didnt like it.. i never learned the complex verb tenses.. although i remember getting lots of conditional last year. simple conditonal past.. and plus que parfait...i kinda knew those.. i still wonder how i passed sometimes. espically sinec i accidently let a profanity slip when i was recording :p .. funny ancedote there.. i ran out of time so i muttered S*** under my breath.. i always wondered if the recorder caught it..

was the explitive in French at least?

lol. no.. i shoulda said merde.. i said S*** instead.. the testing was wereid.. tere were only me and another guy that took it.. it was weird recording when you can hear teh other person in teh room talking abou the exact same topic as you. Oh, i just remembered the speaking prompts. The pic sequence was about a kid who came home late from curfew and mom got mad. they ask you some follow up questions.. you ahve about 30 secs to think.. (or was it 1.. i think barrons book will give you the timing issues), and give 1 min answers. One of the general questions had to do with "Do you think kids should have curfews" and the next picture had to do with two kids trying to decide on their carreers. (not a sequence, just a pic). tehy asked: what do you want to do as a carreer, and why. That was hard.. i dont think i can even come up with a 1 min answer in a 30 secs in English much less in french. ugh.. i sounded really fratuctured in my speaking. too nerve wracking. well im going to eat dinner now but yea. Good luck on the test in may.

thanks for your help

Does anyone know if there are any decent AP French language books? The Princeton Review doesn't seem to make any, and the Barrons book has lots of flaws. We use the Barrons in French class, and every day we find more spelling and grammatical errors, as well as tons of errors with the answer keys. Sometimes we notice them, sometimes the teacher does, but although it's a good guide, the frequent mistakes make it difficult to trust as a source. An Amazon.com search resulted in Ap French: Preparing for the Language Examination and French: Test Preparation Study Guide Questions & Answers (Advanced Placement Test Series (Ap).) Does anyone know if these are any good?
