So I decided that I will take the challenge of taking AP Lang, even though I have a very poor work ethic, because I feel like I need to have better writing skills and learn how to deal with the real world. As you may of known, my school has a 4x4 block schedule, so I don't even start the class until January. We spend only 3 days lecturing and 2 days writing, and the class gives constructive feedback over "this essay sucks". I have poor time managment skills, but I am willing to take the challenge. How should I prepare for the exam?

Write a lot of timed essays in similar conditions as the AP test. Practice each of the 3 sub types of essays. It’s been a while since I took AP Lang but I think they are rhetorical analysis, argument prompt, and synthesis. Also study for the multiple choice section, which is kind of similar to the SAT reading section.

Do you have to be good at english to do well in this class?

Depends on what you mean by “good at English.” If English is your second language, then you’ll probably have some issues in this class. I know a girl who’s really smart, but she moved to America from Vietnam at the age of 10, so some of the English grammar and idioms gave her trouble and she got like a 3 on the test. Not too bad, but I don’t think her college gave her credit for it.

If you are American but are bad at writing essays or interpreting reading passages or finding rhetorical devices in a prompt, then you’ll need to do some serious practice. If you’ve always struggled with these areas, plus can’t speed-write very well, then maybe this AP test is not for you.

But if you’re okay at this stuff, and you study for the test a lot, you’ll probably be fine. A lot of people from my school were pretty average, but they took the class and got 4’s or 5’s on the test.
